A point was made on this forum about barrels and their life expectancy. If I continue with precision shooting I know I will want to rebarrel a rifle sooner or later. What is the approximate cost for a decent barrel installed ? ( stainless on a savage bvssin 300 wsm ) I know there are probably a lot of variables but I'm not a competitive shooter so the best of the best is probably not required.

Thanks

I take it that if the rifle to be rebarrelled was already bedded, the only time this would be an issue is if the bedding extends into the first couple inches of the barrel area? If it didn't, then the same prior bedding job will hold up with the new barrel?

A barrel can be fitted to a Savage either using the barrel nut, or by machining the blank with a shoulder, and discarding the nut. Savage uses the barrel nut system because it makes installation easier. For a smith doing a one off installation, it is a matter of creating a shoulder, or turning down the entire rear of the blank. Six of one, half dozen of the other.
If the action has already been bedded correctly, it shouldn't have to be redone, although changes might be necessary depending on the barrel breech.
