New Barrel

The last barrel was still going strong at 900 rounds without cleaning. It took 200 rounds to get it to shoot as good as it did before I cleaned it. I do shoot moly bullets.
Cleaning is over rated. Unless the groups open up, leave it alone. The only people that tell you, that you NEED to clean your rifle every so many rounds or every relay or every day, are the people that make or sell cleaning supplies.

I think your experience is quite exceptional. In the world of super accuracy (short range benchrest shooting 100-300 yards) cleaning is done quite often to maintain the accuracy level.

What size of groups are you getting when you haven't cleaned your barrel at this level?

hmmmm....moly bullets. Aren't moly bullets somewhat controversial in the fact that they may foul a barrel quicker? I know Hart says not to use them as they have not found a way of cleaning to properly remove the moly build up. I still think you'd have better results with more of a cleaning routine. I'm also interested to hear what type of groups your getting.

The rifle was still shooting 1/2 MOA out to 600 yards. I won the 2 day match that weekend with a high V count and only dropped 3 points (all pilot error). Remember this is target rifle, iron sights with jacket and sling off the elbows. Our bull is a bit smaller then 2 MOA. If I shot BR, I might be more inclined to clean more often, but for my game 1/2 MOA is plenty good enough.

I hear it all the time about how bad moly is, but I have been using it for about 10 years and never had a problem. As far as cleaning goes, if you want to get right back down to bare metal, it will take some work. JB paste, Shooters Choice, Kroil, lots of patches and plenty of elbow grease.

Or, just shoot 10-20 naked bullets and the moly's gone! ;)

I have my second barrel from Rob on my Target rifle now. The only reason I replaced it was the rifle was over weight in my new stock. This barrel seems to foul quicker then the last barrel. I can only go about 200 rounds instead of 900 rounds before cleaning.
Tom, now that you're retired, you will be able to get that new barrel broken in. You will be up to every 900 rds again before you know it.

That will just put copper over moly. The moly works into the all the pours and imperfections in the bore and reduces bullet/barrel friction. The uncoated bullets will just glide over the moly and leave the copper on top. When I cleaned this barrel no traces of copper were found just lots of moly.

Rick, I only wish I was retired. This new barrel seems to foul up pretty quickly and is driving me crazy. I hate cleaning, I would rather be sitting around with a rum and coke in hand, solving world problems. I tried cleaning the bore with the rum and coke in hand but kept spilling the drink.
I will just try to wear it in with some JB. I might have to throw the old barrel up on the CNC machine and see if I can flute 1/2 lbs off it.

Well don't let that maynard guy ever fix your gun problems that is for. I remember the last time he had a rum and coke and in hand to fix my rifle. Lets just say the rum and coke affected the fix up very well!!!!:runaway: Oh wait as I re-call everyone had a hand to help him to fix my rifle.....You all are a bunch of JERKS!!!!:dancingbanana:

I should of stick with other guy's rifle for the rest of the DCRA!!!:p

It's a good thing I only had electrical tape and only 1-2 drinks. If I had a roll of duct tape you would still be peeling it off:p Come to think of it, I have a case of it around here, so I will be sure to bring it for the next time you get an allen wrench in your hand and try to do your own repairs. :dancingbanana:

Dave, I only offered an opinion. I mean if you are going to repair a rifle in the middle of a match, you should make all efforts to do a truly professional job. If a little tape helps. a whole lot has to help more:runaway:
You know Tom, we should have got a picture of that repair job for all to see.
