New bases arrived

mzcloud, first we've heard of NF product not having fine finish.
where did you purchase the product? Not all NF rings have NF on them.

What happened?

PM will do if you don't want to post publically.

No, I don't mind talking about it publicly. I've done it before and, as it's all truthful, don't feel bad about doing it again.

I called him up, credit card in hand, to order a base for my Savage. I wanted to make sure I got the right one and told him what rifle I had and asked which one was right. I was, quite rudely, told to go check the website as he was quite busy. Now, if a guy's having a meltdown in the shop that's entirely understandable. But when a customer is ready to plunk down $175 for a base (which is no better than the one offered by Ken Farrell for under $100) then you should keep your head on straight and do a decent job of customer service. I ended up buying from Farrell after calling him up and talking to him personally, intercepting him on the way out the door to go fishing. Nice guy, took the time to make sure he unserstood what I wanted to do and got me the right product. Normally I would love to support a Canadian, but not at nearly three times the price and with sh*te customer service.

Now, cue the Near apologists who will tell us they've had nothing but stellar service from Richard. That's fine, my experience was sh*te, thus I spend my money elsewhere. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

I've talked with him a few times over the phone and yes....he can come across as a bit "cold". But once you talk with him for a few minutes he starts to warm up. He knows his stuff and makes a quality base.

I should of got the Near instead of the NF ones I just got today with NF rings. The top of the rings doesn't even have NF stamped on it.

NF has not had the "NF" engraved onto the ring tops for at least a year maybe more. We still get the odd set in that has them but mostly in heights that are not commonly used, which leads me to believe they are old stock.
Have yet to see a set that were poorly finished however.

Where I got it from is irrelevant. Overall, I would rate it as good, but not super super. The base finish is better. Maybe the packerizing is a bit too soft and got banged up through shipping.

Guess they changed manufactures. Thanks :)

You are entitled to your opinion as we all are of course but you are the first one that I have heard of with bad customer service from Richard Near. You get what you pay for and Ken Farrel makes half decent bases but the general consensus that I have learned is they are too high. I also had a Farrell base crack on me and as a result would not use one again. Did some research and found that some of his bases were cracking in the past but has apparently fixed the problem. As a result though I will not go near (no pun intended) a Farrell base.

I think the Nightforce rings and bases are outsourced to China :nest: I have a set of his rings and base are love them. Canadian made to boot. Have two long phone calls with him, no problem. Maybe he could smell your breath over the phone:p

Richard DOES make nice stuff but is WEIRD to deal with.
I have had 2 experiences with him.
1st when putting together a rifle for a client who specified a Near rail, so I tried to order 1. He would not sell it to me, the reason he said is that I have a machine shop and he did not want me to copy his design and start producing them.

2nd was with same rifle, the client ordered the rail and asked to have it shipped to me, apparently Richard would only ship it to the client, not to me for the same reason.

I thought that was really weird as I can buy his stuff through Brownells and he would not have a clue where it was going. I KNOW I had better things to do that make rails at that time, this may now change as we continue to grow.
But he does make nice stuff, even if his manner of conducting business is different than most.

As for where NF rings and rails are made, it would NOT surprise me if they were outsourced, many products are. Do I know if they do? NO.

Same experience too.

Nice rail and rings though. Heavy to boot.

NF are not made in China! Why would you say that? Generally I don't respond to ridiculous statemnts, but we sell NF and happen to know they(rings/bases) are made in the USA!

Have also had problems with Near, who wouln't sell to me.

I bought a set of NF rings and one of the rings was poorly finished, almost silver and the clamp portion that attaches to the base was pitted. I know finish is somewhat cosmetic depending on how you maintain your equipment but a new set of rings should should finished properly and the steel should not be pitted and it was obvious. I didn't expect that from NF considering the quality of their scopes and the price you pay for the rings. You expect quality control would be important but these rings in my opinion should not have left the shop. I sent them back and got a set TPS rings with no issues.

I asked nf and was told because of military requests. Nf stamp was removed from their rings.
Mine had a small flaw, but the retailer is nice & willing to replace for another, I hope the new one I receive will be better than expected
