Not sure I'm talking out of school on this one. It's based on a conversation I had with a dealer at the Calgary Easter Gun Show. I was looking over the PU snipers he had on hand, and he told me to wait, he had something else coming in, specifically the above mentioned PU Snipers that went into Polish Police service after the war.

We're not talking large numbers, maybe a dozen or so (if that)....

He actually shared some pics with me of what he had looked at when he was there... These are much more the "real deal" than any cobbled together Molot import ever was:

No idea on firm dates or pricing. But I have given him a "take my money, if I'm jobless in a shelter when these get here, I'll 'Do what needs doing' to get you the money for one..."
 
The reason I asked because PS Militaria has a couple just in. I emailed Jean and he said they are a new import from Molot. Im just curious if a large quantity came in.

What's wrong with the last batch?
They were authentic "sniper" rifles mated with an authentic period scope.
No one claimed they were original.
 
Ok, let's have definitions straightened up.
Made up sniper is anyones put together rifle. Not necessarly ex s`iper rifle.
Reproduction sniper is modern put together but from correct componenets like proper ex sniper rifle, authentic scope and authentic mount. According to what PS says they dont even use original mounts. So I wouldn't call them "correct reproduction".
Authentic refurbished sniper is ex sniper rifle that went through refurbishing process back in '60 if I'm not wrong. Like all refurbishing rifles they might have components from different factories, scopes and mount that originally were issued with other snipers, but now are forced matched. Of course all parts are authentic, but all together those are not authentic original snipers rifles. Typical example would be Molot imports or some snipers imported from Ukraine. This is the best one can do.
Original authentic would be as issued rifle wih mount and scope and all matching and good luck finding it.

The original Molot imports were, by all accounts, the "real deal" - arsenal refurbed PU snipers.

It was the later Molots that there are a lot of questions about. There are some indications that Molot grabbed fairly random Mosin parts, bolt handles, scopes, mounts, etc., and then matched things together to create "PU Sniper" rifles that really aren't. They're parts guns made up to look like PU snipers long after the fact by a company looking to feed a market demand.

That doesn't mean they're bad guns. By all accounts, they are great shooting, accurate rifles.

Honestly, I have no idea what the truth is behind the current Molot imports. But it's an ongoing debate that makes me un-interested in the Molot imports.

The ones pictured are post war arsenal refurbs that went out of country to a client state, and have remained (relatively) un-molested since.

It comes down to who converted them over, at what time, with what parts, and how they did it.

These ones are more interesting to me. Does that mean they'll shoot any better? Nope. But I like the provenance and story behind them. I buy them to shoot them, but just as importantly I buy them for the history behind them.
 
There are talks in US about recent Molot imports that they are trying to mimic refurbishing process of '60. I haven't seen pictures of recent imports to have my opinion, but old imports were as good as one can get (considering refurbished condition). I agree there is very little historical value in modern reproduction, be it Canadian dealer or Molot (if they do it, of course).
 
As far as I've seen and understand all of the talk about Molot rifles being fake or inauthentic are purely unsubstantiated rumours and nothing more. I would have ignorantly and incorrectly advised against purchasing a Molot in the past but the only downside to them is an import mark, as far as collector's value goes.

The confusion comes from the fact that there are major USA based dealers selling made up / put together "snipers" and some of them are built on Molot 91/30s.
 
^^^Nobody said anything about matching non refurbished, I just want something that wasn't put together by a dealer like some of the ones listed online. I'll take an authentic refurbished sniper over a clone any day of the week, that's as real deal as we can expect. If I wanted a clone I'll dig out my tap and die set and make one myself...
