Setting up a new site this weekend and after reading a lot online and doing research seems like setting up near water is a good idea. My new bait site is about 1000 yards from the nearest water source. I know bears will travel a good distance and I've seen them pretty far from water but should a good site be located near it. Looking for info from some successful bear hunters. Thanks.

My best bear stand is at least 1000yds from a water source but i'm close to where they bed and i still have a lot of action at that bait. Being in the dense wood is better than near water in an open area.

It takes some time to find a new bait site especially if you are in a new area where you haven't hunted before. As long as you are along the bears travel route you can be a ways from water but if you are not it will be hard to bring them in unless there is a food supply or bedding area there. I see bear sign almost everywhere in late summer but mostly along brooks that don't dry up in late August. My deer bait sites that are close to brooks bring in more bears than ones that are not near water. This is in early fall when it is dry.

here is an old guy with some advice but some of what he says applies to spring hunting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uMeQ2_cSQg
