Here's pics of my Model 98, Sporter. It is serial No. 8848, manufactured at Oberndorf Germany in 1943. All serial numbers match, on every component.

It looks like the rifle was professionally refinished. I believe the barrel was turned on a lathe to recontour it, but the experts should be able to tell at a glance. It has 4 distinct steps; a Lyman front sight, plus Lyman peep sight.

I didn't weigh it, but I'd guess it's about 7-3/4 lbs, as is. I don't know what the stock is, but it's got a nice heft to it; a great Pachmyr Decelerator recoil pad.

It should be perfect for hunting in the timber, or spot and stalk black bear.

I've got 200gr Nosler Accubonds and 220gr Sierra GameKings that I am gonna load up for this bad boy... figure out which the rifle likes... :)

Nice rifle Demonical, should roll black bears like there is no tomorrow!

I have a similar set up in 458 X 2 inch on a FN Mauser action, using a boyds laminate stock, a 21 inch barrel, Williams FP rear peep, and a similar front post blade.

My bad... it's the classic German 8x57 (.323 cal).

The work cradle? Yeah, pretty cheap! I knocked that off in about 1/2 hour out of scrap wood. Routering the edges took the longest. Cut up a spare bicycle innertube to pad the brackets. :)
 
What Geologist says is probably really good advice Demonical....sooner, perhaps sooner than most in Alberta, you will be in the thick stuff when things get "wild western."

Worst thing to worry about then, is a long barrel getting caught up.

I never thought too much about it, until wild boar hunting, and was glad my shotgun had a 20 inch barrel.

PS: Get it rechambered, and mag finished for 8 X 63mm Swede!

So here we are, blah blahing away at your nice rifle!

Leave it in 8x57!!!, you'll find it feeds like a fat kid in a candy store, I get 2650 from hornady 195's and 50.3 of RL 15, in my husky FN ,flat enough for 300 yds and not too much stress on the bullet therefore no premiums required. I'll agree with Vern though it could probably stand to loose a couple inches of barrel length.
 
I have a Remington 700 Classic in 8x57, and I love it!! I shot a big black bear at about 85 meters with the 180 Ballistic Tip, and penetration was complete through the lungs and out the far side....instant death. Shot a two-point bull moose at 265 yards with the 200 Accubond and another bang-flop. Pretty impressive. I use Vihtavuori N150, N540 and N550 in it. The 180 makes just over 2800, and the 200 does 2675. No slouch this one! FWIW I have several loads that will stay at or under 1moa with this one. Regards, Eagleye.
 
The barrel looks like regular old fashioned euro military stepping, like I have seen on a majority of military 're-fabs'. A simular majority of those rifles are left like that because they shoot so darn well as is and no one wants to break what ain't broke. I like the look of that rifle as it says ' I ain't pretty, but I work so stuff it'. It's a good feeling to have one of those hanging around the vault. I figure it needs a good dose of copper tubing and lead wire in the barrel to make it work properly. I like the 195gr Hornady's in the 8mm personaly. They seem to work very well at 57 velocities and don't break the bank. That means more shootin'. Oh, and cut the barrel, it's a good idea:D. My two cents.

8mm Mauser should put a bear in it's place whenever you say go.

FWIW, I too would cut/recrown or rebarrel that baby to about 20".
