I like it except for the 3 small patches of engraving on the sides of forend iron, just looks like there was some empty space so they slapped a few token etches in there. Id have preferred they just left the forend iron plain, other than that looks nice.

I agree but the old style had engraving there as well. Although it was better laid out

Wish theyd have just added the trident to old school rose and scroll. I do like the darker metal finish as well

I don't know if I would have even noticed it but now that you point it out it looks like an after thought. It doesn't even follow the lines of the gun and the more you look at it the worse it gets.

I can't understand how the Turkish made guns can have nicely figured stocks and the SP1 looks like they were made from framing lumber. My FAIR shotguns and a couple of Browning are head and shoulders above the SP1 for wood although I have some older Beretta that are quite nice.

He was forgiving on the wood to metal finish IMO. I could see some gaps from the video that he didn't mention and obviously it is hard to tell the depth of the scroll work without handling it. The balance would need to be addressed for me as I can not tolerate a barrel heavy upland gun. He states that it is already pushing 8 pounds so adding weight to the stock obviously isn't going to help with that.

I don't think I could form an opinion of the engraving or finish without seeing the gun first hand, it does sound as if Beretta has cheapened the quality of the metal finish though. I don't mind plain wood on a field gun as chances are it will get worn and banged around a little bit anyway as long as the wood is of good quality, and this one appears to be that, I'm happy enough. This one looks as if the wood to metal fit is as good as most 686's, which is to say that it's pretty good for a machine made gun. The head of the stocks are always proud of the metal on Beretta's so in video's and picture's the shadows often make them look as if there are gaps which are not there in real life. Getting rid of the schnabel fore end is a huge plus in my opinion! Optima barrels are nice but they're generally lighter than Mobil barrels so I'm not certain why this gun balances ahead of the trunions, I'd definitely add weight to the stock to balance it out and put up with the extra weight. Overall the gun looks fine to me as long as you keep in mind that it's a bottom end gun for Beretta, and that's not meant to take anything away from it.

Agree, the butt-stock is designed to be proud to the metal work. If you break the stock, you can just order a new one and screw it on yourself. They are strong pieces of walnut but not finished well. I applied 7-8 layers of BLO and then waxed over it all to offer protection. Don't get caught in the rain with the factory finish or you get white water streaks. I like the schnabel fore-end and the regular Mobil choke barrels. Chokes are easier to get.

I prefer the old style over all, but that trident on the new style looks amazing!
Much better than the floral pattern on the olds ones.
