New Book: "Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting"

Bought the book Yesterday... Started reading it tonight. I got through Chapter 1. AWESOME. I'm loving it so far! I wish there were books like this to explain more about shooting :)

Jerry, I'm gonna have to get my press runnin here and hopefully we can do some shooting before the snow falls.

Wally, glad you are enjoying the book. It will be very enlightening.

Look forward to taking you out LR plinking. This is the best way to truly understand all the info.

Believe me, if you can shoot MOA or better CONSISTENTLY and your groups have little vertical (test at 200yds if possible), going out much further is simply a matter of dialing up the scope and leaning into the winds.

Let me know...
Jerry

about half way through the book. amazing stuff. I've got some questions to ask but have to figure out how to ask them first. Gotta let them sit for awhile and make sure I don't come across as too dumb.
oh and I found one typo, an "if" that should have been "of". (bit of editor geek, not that you could ever tell from my posts).

Thanks for all the comments guys.
I'll try to address some questions:

I really enjoy this book... The only thing I see wrong is no 123gr 6.5mm Scenar listed.. LOL.. But oh well can't do them all..

Other than that it is a great book...

I didn't test the 6.5mm 123 Scenar, but we can make a very well educated guess about it's BC based on the 108 and 139 Scenars which I did test. All 3 bullets have nearly the same form factor (~.99) so figuring their BC is just a matter of dividing sectional density by the form factor. The sectional density of the 123 Scenar is: 123/7000/.264^2 = .252. Dividing by the form factor (obtained from the 108 and 139) yields a G7 BC of .255.

Alternatively, you can use the dopplar radar measured CD data for this bullet which is hosted in QuickLoad Unlimited (I think this is available for free download from Lapua's site) or JBM also offers the radar data bullets in the library; they're the bullets with the suffix Cd.

Is this program "Mac" compatible??? **fingerscrossed**

Sorry, it doesn't work on Mac. I believe it's possible to compile the program in a way that makes it work, but I haven't been able to figure it out. I hope to make the next version compatible.

oh and I found one typo, an "if" that should have been "of".

Slavex,
If you can find it again, please let me know where this typo is so I can fix it for the second edition.

Thanks again guys, I'm really thrilled that you're enjoying the book.

Take care,
-Bryan

Bryan, here are the typos I've found so far:

[...]the actual force of drag (measured in pounds) decreases because if the decreasing flight speed.
--p. 16, last phrase the the first paragraph.

However, if the line of sight is elevated by 45 degrees, a +/-5 degree of error will result in about +/-8" of error.
--p. 57, text on left of Table 4.1. I think you really meant +/-18", since the 5 degree error, between 40 and 45 degrees, is indeed about +/-18".

Hey Bryan, here are some more. Don't get me wrong, I love your book and I really enjoy reading it. All want is to help you spot those errors so you can correct them in an eventual second edition.

On page 93, the section title "Sierra 6mm 80 grain Blitz" appears on the last line of the page. There's no spacing between the previous paragraph and the title, and it's content only appears on the next page. You might want to check it out.

Now if you know you're latitude you have [..]
--p. 102, last paragraph. Should have been "your".

[...] bullets are more likely to by dynamically unstable [...]
--p. 161, 2nd line. I think you meant "be".

[...] will introduce aiming error at long range, and vise versa.
--p. 192, last paragraph, 4th line. Should spell "vice versa".

Hope this helps. :)

Regards,
Martin

Hey Bryan, just about done reading my copy of your book. I always figured that ballistics were something that were very complex (which they are) but your book has made it easy for me to understand the concepts. I haven't had the time to put any of your information to the test yet (to busy workin'), but will be heading out to the old gravel pit as soon as I get home and get some rounds loaded up. Thanks for writing such an informative, easy to use book. Cheers. Keep up the great work!

What an amazing book! Bought mine direct because I didn't realize Jerry had some available in Canada. I couldn't put it down, Finished reading it in two sittings.

I can't belive the amount of USEFULL information in this book. I had alot of complaints about how ballistics programs worked. Bryan cleared the mud and made sense of it all. I can't wait to get out to the range and put the included ballistics calculator to the test.

Bryan, Thanks for all your hard work and compiling the numbers in the book. Its great to see that there are shooters looking to improve the sport by confronting the myths and testing the data. Good work, Love the book!

Bryan,

unfortunately where I grew up, students of physics, were nailed to trees and set on fire. I whole heartedly believe that had our teachers took us to the range and used your book for the curriculum, then a large proportion of those trees could have been saved. :D

Excellent book that even a numb skull like me can understand.

Thank You!

hah, didn't realize my Crackberry didn't actually post my reply. the guys above have nailed all the typos I found. Reading the book again on night shift right now. Unlike most technical books, this one keeps me awake and interested. I'm very interested to see what you write next.

Bryan, I really enjoyed your book and have read it several times now. If you write another book on the same subject, which I hope you will, don't be afraid to get more technical. I would love it if you got more in depth with the aerodynamic equations and so forth.

Just joined this site. Just read this forum. Just ordered the book. Fantastic, its just what I have been looking for.

I just got it for Christmas last night. Excellent book, a very good read. I definitely agree with the using the G7 standard, although getting the majority of hunters and shooters to change would be a massive undertaking. I would think the majority of hunters would not be worried about anything over 200 yards, limiting them to over 2000fps, but for the long range crowd an excellent book indeed.

Thanks to Mystic player - my girlfriend came to me about a week and a half ago and said that she couldn't`t get what I had wanted for xmas, and wanted other ideas. I had just read about the book on here and on Longrangehunting, and gave here your website. Shipped in 1 day, wrapped up and in my happy hands for Christmas.
