Looks like our family has adopted a new pet. His name is Dirk and he is a Beagle. I am new to training dogs and would appreciate any direction towards information on this. I plan on training for bird even though he is not a prime species for this, and general companion.

Does anyone here have any experience with underground/wireless fences? I really do not like leashes. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Beagles are a lot of fun. Remember they are hard wired to run and track game. It is important that you train early and set high standards. If he won't do what you expect at 6 feet from you , he sure won't at 50 yds or more and that is where he will spend most of his time while hunting. 50+ yds from you.

For pheasants he needs to be closer, so that is what you should concentrate on.

I have used e collars and have a great deal of respect and faith in them. The underground for a beagle, not so much.

I hunted beagles for many years for bunnies and pheasants. I use labs now, but i can honestly say my beagles OFTEN found and flushed birds that "bird dogs couldn't come up with. They reacted differently to birds than rabbits. With rabbits it was hot track/full cry and run. With birds they went silent until they were on the bird. They then opened up and the gun came up and so did the bird. Often times pheasants are runners. The little beagles are quick enough to pressure the bird to flush.

Good luck and enjoy.

Well, being a newb I do not know alot about the policies lol, formal or informal. I would take a pic and post, however my camera got stolen in Cuba, after my dove hunting trip. He is 8 mo and looks like well, a beagle. So far he is showing to be a very owner affectionate dog, and great with kids, now the training part. I still cannot comprehend how he ended up in the pound.

dog

As with any dog you muzst be firm but fair . They are looking for a pack leader. If you treat it like a child ,, you might as well give up now. Dogs are Dogs and need to be treated like dogs, not people .
