New build, 7mm-08 or 284 win on remington 700 SA?

So Jerry, were you finding the RE 17 inconsistent in velocity? or just not able to get a load with except-able accuracy? Also What powders would you be looking to test in the describe load, 162 gn 7mm in 7-08? Always interested in different powders if there is something to gain.

Extra speed with no real increases in pressure... YES

But accuracy degraded significantly... at least from the perspective of being useable in F class. Accuracy returned when speeds were throttled back so there was no point in the powder given that it could also be temp sensitive.

The vast majority of F class competitors still use Hodgdon Extreme powders of appropriate burn range. The new gen IMR powders are being experimented by some... too new to really know.

A few still use Viht powders but I have not seen it to be superior to Hodgdon but others may have a pet load that rocks for them.

So far, there is no other powder that has caught the F class interest....

Kind of a 7 fan, I use 7mm-08, 7mm-08 AI, 284, 7 SAUM, and 7 WSM in the short actions. Not enough gain in the 7mm-08 and the AI version (the 308 based cases are already a fairly modern design, you gain very little). 284 is a big step up. I built mine for sheep hunting back before the factory built any LW guns. It's on a Rem 600, with mag box modified to allow 3.1" col, and chambered and throated for 160 gr bullets. Put a 600 magnum follower in, slightly modified for the length of the modified box. Works well, and has never given me any issues. Maybe look at some of the extended boxes available (Wyatt for example) and go that way. - dan
