Hey guys. I'm building a rifle right now. I have a left hand savage long action and a mdt tac21 chassis with a PRS stock. I want the gun to be my wind bucking 1000 yard gun. I already have a 223 and 6.5x47. I'm torn between the 284win and 6.5x55 improved. I'm open to other chamberings as well!

What kind of accurate barrel life are guys getting with the 7wsm? I looked into the 26 Nosler, but I'd be investing more money in barrels than my mortgage. I like 260Ai but I feel like it would make the 47 redundant, maybe not. It is nice to not have to trim brass nearly as often.
I might even try a 308win Palma.

where do you get the idea that you will never have to trim brass with 260AI? You will still have to trim it just not nearly as often.

Yes, I shouldn't have worded it like that, but it is substantially less! I have some cases with 8 firings and the haven't grown at all. The only time they got trimmed was initial prep prior to neck turning.

280AI would fit the bill. However, if you like the 6.5's the 6.5x284 is a good option. You would already have 6.5mm bullets to start loading for her ;)

6XC is worth a look...
Wind is wind and you will need to learn to read it...Accurate is Accurate and the 6XC has that in spades dude

Are you planning on shooting f-open with it or just banging steel at a 1000yards? If your not shooting competition you can always use a muzzle brake.

Just comparing the 284 Win to the 280 Rem, and I might be wrong on this one, but I believe the 280 has a slightly longer neck and slightly higher case capacity. This might help if you're looking at using the heavier weight bullets, or the long VLD's. The 284 was designed for short-actions and has a OAL of 2.800", whereas the 280 is a long action cartridge with OAL of 3.330". I'm not sure how big of a real world difference you might see between them, they're pretty close ballistically.

I plan on shooting f-open and f/tr ( I realize I would have to build a 223 or 308 for tr) and possibly precision. I will look into the 6xc but I think a long action is likely useless chambered in 6xc. I like the idea of mag feeding long cartridges if I'm shooting precision or hunting wolves. I'll look at the 280AI as well.

The 284 loaded with 180 bergers or lapuas should still load out of a long action mag depending on your freebore. I think the 280ai might not fit with a 180 seated out past the dognut are.

I'm loading 180 bergers in my 284 winchester long action (COAL 3.155), and it feeds fine out of the AI 300 win mag magazine I'm using. It works surprisingly well actually. The MDT mag I've tried sits too low to feed the 284 cartridges though for some reason (in my HS3 chassis).
