New build ... Which action?

So I'm planning a new build and have pretty much decided on most of the components except the action. It will be mostly a paper puncher but also the occasional deer rifle. I want this thing to be rediculously accurate so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the details:
.260 Ackley Improved
Rock Creek 5R 26" barrel 1:8
McMillan A5 stock or similar
NF 3.5-15X56 MLR
Near rings and base(if the action doesn't have an integral rail)
Not sure of which mag system yet

From what I understand this rig should have similar ballistics to my .338 Lapua and will complement my collection quite well I think.

Thanks in advance,

Ivo

I would choose which ever action you like. As long as it is true I don't think there is any accuracy difference.

On the other hand it sounds like an expensive build and I would suggest an action that is in proportion to the rest of the build....The Surgeon would get my vote.

The Stiller or Barnard are probably the best buys.
An accurized Remington is the cheapest.

Barnard from Ian at Robertsons.
Built a 6 PPC out of one, its just stupid accurate.
8 thumb tacks in a row from 100 yds, I don't count wounded ones or nicked ones.
Ian can also build you almost any stock you want, check his web site.

We can supply this rifle for $4700 (without scope or rings) with 1 magazine, scope rail and muzzle brake. All items here except for barrel blank in 6.5

It is our COYOTE model and does qualify as ridiculously accurate.

Delivery would be 1 week after receipt of barrel blank.

There ya go :D

ivo, sounds like a lot of fun. First thing to consider is your cartridge choice and how it will feed.

I love this wildcat and call my version the 6.5 Mystic. Ballistically, it will keep up with the 338's - not the same but not far behind either.

Problems include mag length and mag feeding. Check the internal OAL available in your mag system. Most will not allow over 2.85" as that is standard for 308/NATO fodder. Some are shorter at around 2.75-80" for actual function (actually put some rds in the mag and see if the internal construction limits OAL - don't just measure the top rd). This greatly restricts bullet seating options. The 139Lapua I use is best seated for a OAL right around 2.9 to 2.95" to put the boattail right at the neck shoulder junction. Will not fit in conventional mags.

Going to a lighter bullet will resolve this but reduce LR performance.

Secondly is stacking and feeding. These same mags are designed for a case with some taper and a shallow shoulder angle. The sharp shoulders may not stack up in the mag well. Also, the forward shoulder may allow the mag rib to hit the case body which really affects stacking and feeding.

Only way to find out is to thumb some cases into the mag. Either it will or it will not.

Small things but will drive you insane when you realise no one even thought about it and now you have a very nice single shot. No issues if you use a 260Rem and keep to mag OAL - bullet problem still remains but it will feed.

At present, the only mag I know of that will fit and feed my 6.5 Mystic is the SAVAGE. The internal box will allow 3.0" OAL - my cases have a bit of room in front of the bullet tip. The center feed allows the cases to drive into the chamber without any fuss (some actions/mags do not feed a sharp shouldered case well). The mags are built like a SBH - way overbuilt but not a bad thing I guess.

You can get 3 in the reg mag. This same mag will house 4 standard 243/308 cases which shows how that stacking problem can occur with just an increase in body diameter and reduction in case taper. Maybe a new follower????

IT WILL NOT RELIABLY FEED FROM THE SSS EXT 9rds MAG AT FULL CAPACITY. I don't have the patience or mechanical tools to resolve this. Best I can load is 5 before things start to hang up and go screwy. However, the 5 that are in there function fine.

As for accuracy, the Savage will shoot as well as any other mag fed action plus you get the bonus of a field ready action AND an awesome safe trigger. I doubt you want a sub 2lbs trigger?

If you can find them, the LE versions come with a McMillan stock and the center feed mag system all ready for a new barrel. You will end up spending a whole lot less money and I am sure you know how well my rifles shoot.

Pity you can't make it out this year for another weekend of reaching to the horizon but if you build this rifle, let me know and I can get you dialed in for 2300+ yds. I am trying for 2600yds this year.

If I can help you with parts and reloading gear, please let me know.

Enjoy...

Thanks for the prompt feedback guys. I was leaning towards a Bat or a Surgeon action but am still undecided. As far as budget I don't really have one per say but funds aren't unlimited either. I was told that the AI mag (ie. Surgeon and V Bull) works well with this round, is this not true.

I already spoke with Rick at ATRS and he will probably do the build as it is very convenient for me to go over and bust his balls and he has done good work for me in the past.

Jerry, I would love to make to Summerland but my kids baptism is on the Sunday so hopefully next year. BTW thanks for the real world info Jerry exactly what I was looking for.
