I could have posted this in the optics section but I figure it may get a little more attention here. For a long time the Bushnell Banner 4-12 Banner scope has been my go to scope for air rifles so I bought one a while back and after 50 shots the rifle ate it. I sent it to Vaughn and of course they mailed me a new one. To me the quality has changed, the don't seem as good as they were but optically they seem decent. I sent a follow up email and they responded that they are not air gun rated, which they used to be so onto my question.....

Does anyone here have a newer China produced Banner 4-12 DOA scope that they use on a rimfire, are the dots actually useable for hold over? I was thinking the dots would be useful for shooting CCI quiet but they may only work on centerfire calibers. A friend has an older Banner 4-16 which has the lines for hold over and they are spaced so far they dont work. but these ones on the new production are a little closer.

I should add that my intended ranges are between 20-75 yards. I am not looking to do any 100 yard plus shooting. I tend to use my rimfires for short game and use other calibers to reach out. Also i realize there are much much better scopes out there jus never used the DOA before.

I had a Banner 4-9 with just cross hairs - no BDC. For a 22 even out to 100, I feel the BDC is a waste. :p All my 22s have MOA scopes with Christmas tree reticles and the lowest is 4-1sx. I just put a Covenant FFP scope on my B22, 6-24x50 and the MOA bars have numbers every 4-bars. The MOA bars give you a good indication of holds for diff ammo and the numbers make a huge diff too. I have a Bushnell Engage 6-18x50 Deploy MOA that doesn't have numbers, I moved that from my B22 to a .223 where needing detailed hold info is not as critical.
The Engage was about $350 and the Covenant was $450 +tx so they each cost more than my 22 rifles .
If you can afford to, buy one of these. However, On my Marlin 60 I have a Tasco 4-12x40 with Adj Objective which I found quite good for a 22 @ about $100. Spend all you can afford, then squeeze a few more bucks out
Good luck shopping, maybe look at the EE for used optics. Some good deals there at times.

I was considering putting a Burris Droptine 3-9x40 22LR Rimfire scope on my 22. Parallex is set for 50yds. Canadian Tire has them listed for around $275. Decent reviews on it.

I looked at the Burris site and the reticle just has 3 BDC dots then the bottom post. Fine if you're planning to plink/hunt, but not very useful for targets. The BDC is irrelevant for a 22 'cause it doesn't drop that much at usable range. As above, I advise getting a MOA reticle if you're shooting targets AND go higher than 3-9x. 4-12 is good and higher is better. 6-24 is plenty for 'casual' (not competition) targets. I'd look into the Cabelas scopes - http s://www.cabelas.ca/promo_items?promoid=P07J-all&orderby=19&category1=Shooting&category2=Optics&brand=CABELA%27S - 2 at your price point.

BDC is a pointless reticle except for very niche applications.

The reason is that those hold overs are only valid for a specific ammo, specific caliber, under specific altitude + atmospherics.

It's a single use case of a much generalist (and better) grid reticle.

Get something with a christmas tree reticle, like the vortex diamondback in ebr-2c style.

EASILY transferable to any gun and useful for any caliber any platform.

Thanks for the responses so far, the DOA reticle seems pretty similar to the BDC.. I am actually having thoughts on buying a Hawke Airmax 4-12 x 40mm which has an etched reticle and is meant for airgun distances. A friend has one and the lines below the crosshair are very fine.

I like the 22lr BDC on the Nikon rimfire and it works well. Gives you reference marks which are useful. I find the medium thickness reticle is just right for me.
I also have a Hawke Airmax 4-12x40mm and find the reticle a little too fine.

On most of the BDC reticles, (22 lr scopes, anyway) the reticle only works at the max magnification setting.
Is your airgun a springer? Those are scope killers. Get something specific for an airgun.
