Hey there, im looking to buy a svt 40 and mosin nagant.
My question is what should i be checking and looking for when i inspect them?
Breech? Bore? Etc

Thanks in advance!

I'm no expert but I think the components of the gas system on the svt would be something to look at. I think it's an adjustable one and the gun should come with a gas tube wrench. I don't know if it has to be a specific wrench or if people use other tools for the same job but that's something I would inquire about for sure.

Bore and overall condition of stock and such on both for starters.

If you can, check the gas system on the SVT-40.

Please note these will be refurbs and, as such, have "forced match" parts so don't go all crazy thinking you have an "all original & all matching" Mosin Nagant or SVT-40 just because all the numbers are the same.

Nevertheless, the Russian refurbishing system is giving us some mighty fine firearms to play with.

I have purchased 2 SVT-40s and 3 Mosin Nagants so far and all have been fine and fun to shoot.

Happy shooting !!

I recommend going on youtube and watching a few videos on field stripping and the like. Most guys name all the parts as they take it apart, and you'll get a good idea what you're looking at and what to look for. Most SVT's I've seen don't come with the gas adjustment, but you can pick one up online somewhere if it becomes an issue. Other than that, search the threads here, and you should find all the information you need or want.
Oh and don't make the same mistake I did, buy a lot of ammo to take to the range with you.

SVTs are starting to get harder to find... Don't delay! As suggested, check the stickies...

They usually cost a bunch more, but I'm partial to hex reciever Mosins made between WW1 and 2... Quality was best then, and they tend to be great shooters.

I strongly encourage you browse the selection at Westrifle. They have some of the nicest MN out there, and the garbage at CT or big boxes can't even compare... Corwin Arms is also showing Hex receivers in stock, and Martin usually has nice ones as well. Again, the clean MNs are getting more difficult to find, so don't drag your feet!

Always glad to help a fellow black hat!
