Looking to purchase a new rifle that will be used for bison, moose, caribou and maybe sheep, in that order. Have a minimum requirement of 30 06 180 grain. Thinking 300 wsm, but wondering if 06 might be enough. Will take game from 20 to 3 or 400 meters...Typically I stick with the same grain cartridge...180 in the past. Not concerned with hand loading. Any opinions? Thanks!

8MM Remington Magnum. Blows the 300 Winchesters away.
Options include, 338-06, 9.3x62, the new 9.3x66 Sako cartridge is in-between the existing 9.3x62 and 9.3x64 Brenneke.
I'm still big on the 8mm Remington.

Never hunted bison but for the paper numbers and the distance required I'd choose a flatter faster 30. My vote is 300 Weatherby. Fast flat hits hard when it gets there. Depending on rifle you'll get 1 or 2 more in the mag. I'm not firm believer in make the first count but keep shooting till its down. 180 gr partition or trophy bonded bear claw. That's my thoughts but best to ask someone experienced in hunting those animals in your terrain
Bison are prehistoric by design, tough as nails and will run when they hear snowmobiles or quads. I have a 375 H&H magnum for them at short range, .338 Lapua Magnum for long range. Minimum I would use would be 338 Winchester Magnum.
The rest of your list can be hunted with a 30.06 really easy
I think he meant that the 300 Win. Mag. has a bit more punch than the 300 WSM especially with heavier bullets like 200 gr. or heavier.

The WSM(I've had a .270 and .300) are all right but I prefer the lower pressure the full size 300's operate at.
And while I like a light rifle the weight difference isn't that much.

Yes, the .300 WM, .300 Wby and to a lesser extent since you don't reload the .300 H&H are all great. I do like the 200gr Partitions in the .300 Magnums and the 220gr Partitions for shorter (less than 300 yards) as they offer good performance on big game while still having very manageable recoil.
Hard to go wrong with a .338 for your purposes, my only experiences with one (Remington 700 BDL) had less felt recoil then the same gun in .300 WM.
The .338 WM or even the .338 Federal or .338-06 if you hand load has plenty of horse power to reach out to 300 yards, if you can, but with Bison being on the list I would choose the .338 WM loaded with 225 tsx or some 250 Nosler partition of similar tough bullet and shoot everything in NA.

I on the other hand despised the 700 BDL in .338 WM that I shot. I don't know what the heck it was, but the thing was terrible. I shot it side by side with my 700 Safari Classic in .416 RM and I found the .416 more agreeable.
