New Cartridge - the "338 Federal"

Funny how a big company can take a well established wildcat of many years old and call it their 'new' design. This and the 25 and 270 cal versions of the 308 have been around for a long time.

This proves the Win engineers wrong that this bullet class can fit in a short action. The reason I heard why Win did not bring out the 338WSM.

at short ranges, this would be ideal but ballistics will stink compared to the smaller cals once you go beyond 300yds. Will it kill any better then a 7-08 or even the 308?

But that's really not the point is it. At least no one will need premium bullets to work.

it would be cool, in a LEVERGUN!
Marlin won't touch it, I'd guess. And Browning and Win both offer the 325WSM. Plus, Browning will forever chamber for the .358 Win (and rightly so!). So, I'd be surprised to see a lever in this calibre.

Any of the major companies would be foolish to ignore .338 Federal.
Being a neck up from a .308 or a neck down from .358 the case is dead easy to form & load.
Let's face it, the .325WSM, as much as I love 8mm, hasn't set the world on fire.
The fact that ammo is pretty thin on the ground doesn't help either.
As far as .358 Win goes, it just doesn't have as wide a range of premium bullets either.
Plus, who else actually chambers rifles in .358 Win on a regular basis?
And surprise, surprise, .338 Federal echoes the feelings of the late, great Jack O'Connor(whatever you may think of him) whose proposed wildcat the .338-57 gives similar performance with similar bullets weights.
It is simply a 7x57 case necked up to .338.

In my opinion it's a cartridge that won't go away easily, between the desire for .338 cal and for "new" short action cartridges.

Want to put some money on this? :D

Not a betting man.
But alot of people said negative things about the 17HMR and the WSM cartridges.
Who's to say?
And remember, opinions are like #######s......everyone stinks but mine.:p
