New Chinese SKS from CannadaAmmo

I just took my new SKS to the range for the first time. I received it a week ago, and I took that time to clean it up and refinish the stock. The stock was really rough when I got it but once I stripped off the finish, sanded it down, and applied 5 coats of tung oil, it looked very presentable. I will post pics once I have some. I already have a Russian, but I wanted a Chinese one because a lot of folks think they are the best shooters of all the SKS's. I can't say one way or another, but I am very happy with the way this one shot. After shooting a few rounds to get the elevation sorted out, here's what it did at 100 yards with basic SKS sights:



I was using basic silver box Norinco ammo, and aiming at the center of the red cross on the target.

Yes it was. I have a hard time seeing the target in detail at that distance, and the one round that hit left of center was probably a poor shot by me instead of inaccuracy from the gun. So all in all I was happy with the performance.

I had been thinking about a red dot (Bushnell TRS-25) for this gun, but now I am thinking a Tech Sight, or perhaps a Williams Firesight Peep sight set.

Thoughts anyone?

why was the stock in such bad shape, are these guns not new?
 
They are still military surplus. There will be some with bumps and small marks. The Catalpa is nice wood with a grain like birch but they are pretty crudely finished by just dipping them in varnish and hanging to dry. Some are pretty smooth and some have a very rough finish. I've had some where the grain was so rough you could almost get splinters and some that were silky smooth. They were made by a lot of different factories so finish quality varies as it does with Russian refurbs.

Play the ammo/rifle combo purchase game..... Sometimes its a nice one , sometimes not so nice..... I just ordered some more from marstar...Hope I get a good one!!
