I am a novice reloader and I just got a F-1 Master Shooting Chrony to try and take some of the guess work out of my loads. From day 1 I could not get it to read. I set it up 10 feet away and it says Error 1 every time I shoot. In the manual it says that Error 1 corresponds to sensor 1 not reading. However, I have try realigning and realigning. Are the units really that sensitive or do I have a lemon unit? Any advice as I am losing hair rapidly and baldness runs in my family.
 
My shooting chrony can be hit or miss also. Light conditions play havoc on mine. How high are you shooting your bullet above the sensor?
 
If indoors... Know that under flourescent lights the chroney will not work properly... You must use incandesant(sp?) lights

I find best results are had outdoors.
 
It may not work well under a clear blue sky unless you use the white diffusers.

If you are too close the muzzle blast can upset the readings.

make sure unit is looking into the sky and not tree branches.

You may think you are 6" above the sensors, but the sights are almost 2" higher than the barrel. Try aiming higher.

I have used about a dozen of their units without ever a glitch (until i shot it). It is more likely a user issue than a QC problem.

You might try using a 22 to play with it to figure out what works and what does not.
 
I will try shooting a little higher and try moving it out a little further. I tried 10ft away with a 243 and then a 300wm. I got the same results: ERROR 1. I think it is a good idea to try with a 22 to see if I can get it to work. Thanks for the suggestion. I hope I can get it to work.
 
Quick phone call to Shooting Chrony as a last ditch effort proved fruitful and saved me money. Talked to a tech guy and he suggested cleaning the phone cord jacks on the unit and lcd screen. I did this then fiddled with the cord and observed something. The jacks are loose and when wiggled the lcd will lose power and then gain power. I tried holding the jack on the lcd tight and shooting a rubber band through. Voila, the rubber band velocity was 110 fps. I am going to try going to Radioshack or a similar store and getting a replacement 6 conductor telephone cord. Perhaps this will solve the loose jack problem. I hope this thread helps other people that are having problems in the future.

PS- the funds saved will go towards a Chargemaster 1500 combo kit :D
