I've owned originals both series 70's and 80's in the past. What is the consensus of Colts latest version vs their older ones?

Thanks

Colt still makes handguns?.....who knew  ;)

Sorry to be facetious but Colt just isn't on my radar when it comes to these. For whatever reason I think STI, S&W, Sig, Kimber etc etc when it comes to today's better quality mainstream 1911's and names like Ed Brown, Les Baer, Nighthawk for high end examples.I don't know why but Colt just doesn't come to mind other than for collectible WWI/WWII stuff.

I've heard the new production models are quite good. I handled a Stainless Gold Cup at the range last year and it seemed nice enough. It wasn't as tight or smooth as my STI Rangemaster, but the Rangemasters are creeping into semi-custom territory. If I was in that market for a mid range, I would definitely consider a Gold Cup or a Delta over a lot of other guns. At the higher end, the Special Combat Government models will apparently hold their own against other semi-custom 1911s but are very rare in Canada.

Yea someone with a real opinion:p Anyway I sold my STI Targetmaster last year, why, I dunno:p I'll give the Rangemaster a try. They have jumped in price by $500 since the beginning of the year:( I think they are being discontinued, maybe there is a deal out there to be had.

I bought the Colt Wiley Clapp Government version (70 series) brand new from Arms East about 1 year ago. It is quite tight, and is very accurate (match barrell).
I am personally quite impressed with the quality. It might not be a 3K 1911 but for 1700$, real good value. I used to own a Smith E series 1911 and the Colt is a better gun as far as I am concerned.
