Hey gang,

So recently passing my course, I am looking at getting into coyote dispatching. I am looking at a .308 as I am in the market for one for other purposes, and I don't want to spread my calibers across the map...

So any advice for a newb? How to approach landowners for permission, rifle size (again, prefer .308, but would consider .223), worthwhile/useless gear, time to hunt, etc etc...

Let's hear what the more experienced have to say...

FWIW I am in S. Ontario

Thanks for the time.

If that is the hunting license course you just took, you need to go back and review some of it. A big chunk of southern Ontario does not allow the use of the .308 for hunting. It's all quite clear in the hunting regulations booklet.

Actually, you are incorrect.... a big portion of ontario doesn't allow .308 during deer season... in that same portion it is perfectly legal to use a .308 during coyote season.... as long as there is no season for whitetails....

A person hunting small game may not carry or use a rifle of
greater calibre than a .275-calibre rifle, except a muzzle-loading
gun, in the geograhic areas of Brant, Chatham-Kent, Durham,
Elgin, Essex, Haldimand, Halton, Hamilton, Huron, Lambton,
Middlesex, Niagara, Norfolk, Northumberland, Oxford, Peel,
Perth, Toronto, Waterloo, Wellington or York.

I would suggest a visit to trade ex and get a mauser in 6.5 x 55. It works nicely on deer and meets the calibre restrictions.

The 6.5 x55 is a great caliber, from coyotes to moose(with different bullets of course). I load mine with vmax for coyotes. I have some 160gr bullets for moose that i haven't loaded yet.

As above, this is from page 79 of the 2012-2013 Ontario hunting regulations.

You are confusing two separate and distinct paragraphs under the firearms regulations. The first part does deal with deer season, but the second part is for all small game hunting.

Firearms

If you are hunting small game in an area where there is an open
season for deer, moose, elk, or black bear, you may not possess or use
a rifle of greater muzzle energy than 400 foot-pounds or shells loaded
with ball or with shot larger than No. 2 shot (or if using non-toxic
shot, you may not use steel shot larger than triple BBB steel shot, or
bismuth shot that is larger than double BB bismuth shot), unless you
possess a valid licence to hunt deer, moose, elk or black bear as the
case may be.

Personally if I were looing for something I could shoot yotes with and use for big game as well it would be a 270. Hard to beat, probably one of the most versatile calibres around.

Myself I hunt yotes with a Ruger #1V in 22-250 and deer with a hand me down Model 71 in 348 but if I were out to buy a new one gun does all then I would be finding myself a 270, in fact given my predelection for #1's it would be a 270 Medium Sporter #1 for me.......

I am looking at a .223. Don't want to add another caliber to the fold, as I am already holding a AR, .223 is the way I am leaning.

Now, just to pick out a nice new rifle. I have been researching Savages' Axis, and XP 10 line...

I just took my hunting course and discovered I can't use my BLR 308 I just received from CGN user on deers in this area (although I plan on hunting in QC eventually). Then I read the paragraph above. So now I can't use the .308 on coyotes.

But on the second day I asked the instructor for clarification on this passage. i.e. does the geographical clause apply to the muzzle loading exception, or does it apply to the whole sentence? If it's for the whole sentence, then you're allowed as long as you're not in one of those locations. He couldn't answer the questions.

I've been meaning to ask MNR but haven't had a chance. So .270 might be safer.
