Finally got my new Stevens 200 .22-250 together and off to the range after i type this. Did the stock in Krylon olive drab and for the life of me, could not locate any webbing paint in Sault Ste. Marie. So I did the fianal coat in olive Excel Speckle Stone from WalMart, followed by three coats of Satin clear coat. Turned out very well, the stone finish is quite subdued and not rough - easy on the side of the face:

Also built my own e-caller - followed directions from another web site and this is how it looks with a coating of granite stone finish:

Made up of 4 peices, a Coleman cooler, a PA horn, an amplifier and a CD player. I will be upgrading to a MP3 player when I can find a cheap one that suits my needs.

The amplifier is a Radio shack unit #277-1008 - ordered it from the 1-800-223-8344. Came from Fort Worth Texas - paid about $14.00 US.

The Speaker is a Speco SP 5 unit - cost me $14.04 each to get two of them here as the company had a $15.00 minimum order - so two came to $14.75 US or so, by the time I added on the postage and duty, jacked the price up. Specs on the speaker are at this location and this is where I purchased them from - good guys to deal with:

Cooler cost under $6.00 from CTC.(Model # 5205A753G).
I painted it with white Krylon Fusion paint, but for whatever reason, it isnt sticking all that well - so redid it with Tremclad flat white - no worries now. Also did the PA horn. Heres how it looks all closed up (am going to add some grey and black tones later):

Attached the speaker to the underside of the cooler flip lid so it can store away while in transport. When in use, flip it over and the electronics are inside and the speaker on top. I am going to throw a hand warmer in there as well to keep the battery in the amplifier warm:

So when its all set to go, will be like this, amplifier in the cooler and cable to the MP3 / CD player. A buddy of mine has 30 feet of wire and we will splice and solder it together and will be all set for wolves & coyotes:

My brother was going to make me something similar but with an iPOD. I decided to spend the money and get a FOXPRO as I was getting fed up with wires.
Do yourself a favour and come up with a neat way of winding up your wire. It gets very hard to work with when it is cold.
Having said that you can als get an MP3 palyer hooked up to a trasmitter, should solve the wire issue.

That's a pretty cool set up you have. Nice to see what some people can do with a little thought and creativity. I might have to borrow the cooler idea.

Thanks for the inspiration. I now have a shopping list.

BTW: I clicked on one the 'hurt coyote pup' sound on that last link and my dog who was in another room went absolutely insane, ran at me tried to get up on the table, barking like a freak and tearing the room up. 10 minutes later she is still wound up. My wife is totally pissed at me;) I never even thought of the dog when I clicked on it.

I've often thought of the Mp3 player idea as I have a high-capacity player and the audio transmitter to broadcast to FM frequencies.

Mucho thanks for the links! That's the only thing that was holding me back. I tried "Googling" for the calls in Mp3 in the past but didn't have a great deal of luck.

I just played this one http://www.varmintal.com/group2.mp3 and my sister's cocker spaniel just flew up the stairs and stared at the speaker with his head cocked sideways. LMAO. Yup, this is gonna work!

I wouldn't spend a dime on a Fox Pro knowing I can do it myself for near nothing in expense since I have everything here anyways.

Good luck with it!

On that noise, my sleeping Brittany finally rose and came over tilting his head, then he just wanted some attention. What was funnier was my teenage son and his friend came down stairs rather quickly wondering what the heck all that weird noise was!! 0:eek:

Jesus, I hope you didn't shoot them? lol.

Well back from the range and the bush. Got the rifle sighted in OK and headed out for an hour to an area where we have some coyotes. Was getting 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 inch groups with factory Federal ammo, I am going to have to lighten that trigger a bit. Wind was blowing and I was in a hurry so I hope I can shrink those groups in the future.

Caller worked well - I downloaded a 20 minute segment from Varmit Al's web site and played it with the CD inside the cooler. It was loud!

A couple of things - I cant take credit for the design - someone else thought it up and I followed the directions (except for the cooler, that was mine). MP 3 player will be a better way to go, will wait till I find a cheap one on sale. Also, you cant turn the amp up all the way, you need to find the sweet spot where it doesnt hiss but still belts out the sound.

Oh and re: remotes, can be done with microphone hardware used by musicians, not into spending $125 for a set off e bay. Supposed to be a way to do it with FRS radios - plug the CD player into the mike jack on the transmitting radio and the amp into the earbud jack on the receiving FRS ..... Will get aroundto trying it one of these days and post back.
Take care

That's something I never even thought about. Please let me know how this works out as I have a Predator Masters caller and a set of radios sitting here that I would love to make wireless. I just checked and there are two different jack sizes on the side of the radios. I would need a smaller one for the mike.

ha ha ha thanks for the links.for all the call,s,and the tips on making a call......the wifey is going nutz here:D ..
snicker snicker.....i think she part dawg:eek:

Learned the hard way today - caller lasts for about 1 hour continuos play at 18 below before need to replace CD player batteries. Next time, will put it in an old toque with a chemical hand warmer and see if it lasts longer!
Just some food for thought! The caller is in a cooler. Try using a hot water bottle on the bottom. Also try using lithium batteries. They are better in cold weather. Let me know how it works if you try my suggestions.

If you have a 12v DC power jack on the CD player, go to Princess Auto and buy a surplus 12v gel cell. They are a lead acid batter that should give you 20x the battery life of dry cells.

Now THAT'S a heavy mo-fo coyote caller. You better set up and stay put for many hours... I wouldn't be haulin around a 50lbs cooler! :D
