I posted awhile back of a new rifle I added to my collection. A CSA Vz 58. Now, after finally getting an extra box of ammo for it, I finally can do a range report.

Here is the new rifle. Isn't it pretty. Don't you just want to touch it. I meant the rifle.....

Here is my shooting range. I'll be shooting at the 100 yard mark for this range report. Its raining and windy during the range report but its actually nice since it keeps the damn mosquitoes away.

Here is the two kinds of ammo I used in this range report. The first box is Norinco 5.56x45 NATO. Grain is unknown but I got the box for free with the gun. Never hurts to ask for freebies when buying a new gun. The second box is a Winchester .45gr Hollow Point 40 round value box. I had no idea if this stuff would work well with the Vz 58 since I have no idea if the twist rate for the barrel is 1 in 7.

My target, plain, un shot, but scratched to hell.

I did 5 practice shots at a steel target in the shape of a sheep at 100 yards just to get a feel and function test of the rifle. Its new after all, gotta get use to it. Here are 4 casings of the first 5 shots. I couldn't find the 5th case anywhere or maybe I think I fired 5 rounds. Anyways, the interesting note is the major dent to the casings after they've been fired.

Alright, going to fire 5 rounds of the 5.56 Norinco at the lower left side of my target.

ovrec What the hell? That's terrible!

Well, Decided to crack open the Winchester .223 and give it a try at the lower right side of the target.

w:h: Now that's a decent group. I wondered if its the ammo or just me so I decided to give the 5.56 another try in the upper right side of the target. I wonder where the 5th shot went? Oh its right on the board there you can actually see where it hit on the board. So 4 good hits a 1 flyer..

f:P:2: :sok2 This one you can see on the board where I was hitting not on paper. If you look at it that way, its 4 good shots close by each other and 1 flyer. Beginning to think its just me and not the ammo. I switched back to the Winchester .223 for the upper left side of the target.

Other than I was hitting high, that's another decent group. Again its 4 good hits and 1 flyer. I decided to finish off the middle with the Winchester .223.

Humm.... Like the group is decent if you exclude the flyer, but again, hitting high with 4 good hits.. I'm uncertain if that flyer is actually a flyer though. Wonder if that area would get filled in if I decided to do 10 shot groups.

Finally, here is the whole target. I hate reading some peoples range reports, then they only show a really zoomed in picture of sweet ###y little groups but not the whole target. Its really annoying because you know there range report is full of ####. The .223 Vz 58 can't compete against an AR-15 in accuracy but it can compete in terms of badassness. One of the coolest things when firing the rifle today is the massive fireball it spits out after each shot. Probably not good if your fighting in a war at night, but it sure does look badass. Like flames on a car badass. One ####ty thing that happened today was not with the gun, was with my truck. I just changed the oil yesterday before this when I noticed on the ground going up to my truck, a trail of an oil leak. I crawled under there, looked at the oil filter, no leak, looked at the drain plug, no leak, looked at my oil pressure sending unit, LEAK!!! F@#%@#%@#%$#$^#$^#$%K!!!!!! First time I've used synthetic oil in my truck and the oil pressure afterward was crazy high. Never saw it that high before and when I drove home, the oil pressure was super low and the oil level didn't drop much at all. Good thing it only leaks when the engine is running so that gives me time to get a new seal for my oil pressure sending unit. Wow I've hijacked my own thread. Anyways, other than that BS, The rifle was fun to shoot and satisfactory accuracy.

Good accurate report sans sugar coat. Wasn't able to get mine out this weekend as I had limited time at the range.May have to do a report of my own though next time I get her out.

Had an issue with the first mag(5 rounds)I put through mine but wasn't with spent brass. A case didn't fully eject and the next round was picked up and rammed in awkwardly and jammed up. The unfired round had a dented case but wasn't so bad so I just cleared the jam and kept on going. May have been an issue with the way I loaded the mag but either way no problems after that and now use the magwell adapter with ten round Lar15 mags and no problems thus far. Kinda awkward spent brass though on yours Mumbles ????

Nice range report, still waiting to get out with my .223/5.56. Just a thought, aren't the twist rates 1:7 on these guns? That should be more suited to 55 gr and heavier ammo iirc. Might be worth trying some 55-62 or similar and see what the groups look like. Isn't the norc kind of known for having undersized bullets? And I've never been able to get a decent group with that 45gr Winchester stuff, in any of my guns, seemed to be just too light/fast for my twist rates I'm assuming.

My CSA 5.56 has been good for about 1000 rounds so far. Norc ammo was highly inaccurate in my rifle about 3.5 min. and troublesome. American Eagle 55g. of the commercial seemed about best. I believe the rifle is very comparable in accuracy to an AR the big issue is the stock sights. For me good for 3 min. at best. I mounted a NEA railed guard and a TRS25 and voila my groups size decreased by at least 30%. Mine seems to be a solid 2 min gun. I reload those dented cases and they work just fine for me. One caveat, the manual warns against dry firing, I would suggest using a snap cap, getting a new firing pin may not quick or easy.

Yes, i'm now use to the ghost ring sights on my M-14 and going back to the style of sights from the SKS or the Vz 58 really sucks. With the M-14 I can easily seem my target the whole time, it never goes blurry. But with these sights, the target goes blurry on me. I have to look up sometimes just to make sure I'm actually aiming at my target especially when aiming at the small round targets which basically disappear once I start aiming at it. I may get a side scope mount for it and get a red dot sight for it and that may improve a lot. I don't want to get a full on scope because this is not a DMR rifle by any means. The twist rate of the guns barrel is 1 in 7. I had to look it up on the CSA website because the blue ray Data Disk is completely useless to me. I'll give that American Eagle stuff a try. I'm only buying 1 box of each stuff and trying it with my gun just to see what it shoots best with rather than buying a whole 1000 round case that doesn't shoot worth ####. My buddy has a Ruger Mini-14 that he had to do the same with. When he first got it, it couldn't hit the side of a barn at 100 yards, but after him playing with it, changing ammo, getting a scope for it, hes at 1.5" - 2" at 50 yards which translates to 3" - 4" at 100 yards. Not bad considering that's what he use to get with it at 25 yards. Plus, I bet a new gun takes time getting use to like the trigger, sights, and feel and possibly even breaking in the barrel before you start getting some really accurate shots. I remember always getting odd groups with my CZ 550 .270 with a scope. 2 really close to each other, and one 2" away and no mater how hard I tried, these groups were consistent. All the suddenly after reaching past 100 rounds in that gun, I all the suddenly can do 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" groups with it at 100 yards. One other things is the trigger on this .223 Vz 58.... It sucks. Maybe because its new, I don't know, but its not a smooth trigger pull. You squeeze the trigger, and it slips in 3 stages before it finally fires. No consistent creep or creep, then stop just before its about to fire, then squeeze and tiny bit more and fires. Both my SKS and M-14 are like that. Kind of like a Savage AccuTrigger. The trigger really sucks and I hope its just because its new and needs to be broken in.

Mumbles I hear you.
I switched out my front post for a fiber optic. If you look for one, I'ld suggest green, I find it stands out best.
The rear post I switched for a peep sight.
Between those two things, I reduced my groups by two thirds.

Denting seems to be coming from the extractor "flinging" the spent casings hard against the bolt on ejection. It was recoommmend to me to cut a coil or two off my extractor spring, which I didn't do. I have since replaced the spring and the denting seems to have gone away.
