New CZ 550 UCS (Urban Counter Sniper)

Was on CZ's site and noticed a bunch of new firearms for 2010. One of interest to me personaly is the 550 UCS. Pretty impressive looking gun.
 
Remington has a similar offering with their xm3 that sports a 18 1/2 inch tube. Definatly not for shooting from mountain top to mountain top but probably great for targets 50 to 300 yards Hence the "Urban" environment.
I read some stats on some 308 loads that were around 2565 fps for the 168 out of a 16 inch rock creek barrel with 1 in 10-inch twist. I do like the concept.

That being said.... Dear Santa. :)
 
Looks some purdy, huh? Their price is obscene in my opinion. Build you own custom version with 18.5" barrel for the same or less money.
 
looks like a nice unit, but why would anyone want that over a AR-10 or SPR in a Urban theater?
 
The price is stupid high on the CZ's, and I am not overly impressed with them, especially the trigger. I agree with 2bad4u2, you could build a custom that will be better for that...

Yeah you're right and they are made in Czech Republic not in Germany, Swiss, USA, a former communist country where the salaries are very low and the Koruna (Czech Republic money) is also very low compared to our dollar (100 Czech Koruna = 5.70069 Canadian Dollar), two factors who habitually have an impact on the value of guns.

Or better yet, mate a cut down and re-crowned 700 SPS Varmint with a LTR or McMillan HTG stock instead. Follow it up with your choice of detachable mag system and a few extra mags and voila!...it's done!
 
the only time I think a short gun like this is needed is if its on a folder stock with a can to take one noun down,I would never want a bolt gun in a urban setting, its just not needed, That being said like 2B4U wrote that would be the much better way to go, hell even the choate folder on a LTR would be ideal
 
I use to have a real personal bias for long barrelled rifles but my preference now for most of my shooting is on the shorter length 20"-22" variety. Unless I had a reason to do so, I'll never build another rifle over 22" in length. The vast majority of my shooting is done at 200 yards or less so what's the point in doing otherwise?

Off topic here, but one of the handiest rifles I own is a Model 94 Trapper Carbine in .357 Mag. It's a fun little rifle that's extremely cheap to shoot.
 
Nothing wrong with shorter barrels with many calibers, in fact harmonically they are more stable and can be extremely accurate.

As to the subject of the post... Norinco and Mossberg make some very impressive looking guns as well.
 
I don't understand why all the hate for the CZ550 - that particular model is pretty reasonably priced compared to something from N. America. It has a det 10 rd mag, muzzlebrake, reliable action, oversized bolt knob and excellent stock. While it ain't my cup of tea, it is an excellent value compared to a similiarly equipped Remington/HS Precision/FN. Compare an LTR base model which is 13-1400 and doesn't come with det mag (unless you find a rare variant like moi) and has no oversized bolt knob, muzzlebrake, etc. If you put a det mag on an LTR, muzzlebrake, oversized bolt knob, and polished up the action - you would easily be at the same price point as the CZ and you still have to have the wait time on top of it. The triggers on the CZ rifles are quite good at least in my opinion compared to a stock Remington trigger. W/O gunsmithing, these rifles seem pretty competitive and the nice thing is that CZ rifles shoot very well right out of the box. I have to say I don't much like the name: "Counter Sniper"??? Not a big sniper problem around here.

Too many of us are used to having rifles built so it may seem like these rifles are a rip off or not very good but for general consumption they are really decent. I think 18.5" and 20" are pretty much the same ballistically and the shorter barrel is nicer for maneuvering around, not a bad package at all. Remember the target market for these are police snipers where shots will be taken close in <100m on hostage takers. These are not military/squad weapons so comparing them to AR10's or other short barrel semis really isn't an apple to apple comparison. It is nice to see more competition for the short barrel tactical market not a lot of good offerings out there right now...
 
I don't hate CZ's as per se - just their price. For that kind of money, you simply shouldn't have to settle for second best. For me, spending the same amount of money on a custom rifle where I can get anything I want (within reason) makes more sense.

If I were to chose a factory offering to achieve a similar rifle, I'd be really hard pressed to select any other rifle than the Savage FCP10 McMillian and shorten the barrel accordingly. Hell, you could buy a high quality scope and mounting system for the difference in money.

To each their own.
 
Hate may be a bit harsh but much of this thread is on how bad this particular rifle is for the price. Keeping in mind that not everyone has access to a smith these are pretty good. I am of the same mind as you - I would build what I wanted but if I had no access to a smith and was going to get something out of the box, this is actually set up pretty decently.
 
any gun now days,gas or semi will have no problems holding 1 moa at 100meters and under so the whole short bolt action thing is a non point
 
You could buy a Savage Precision carbine, Farrel base and rings, shilen pre-fit match grade 18.5 inch barrel, bipod and a pelican case for that kind of money. Or use the factory barrel and buy a decent scope, and still be under the price of the CZ.
 
Yeah but it would still be a push feed action. If you are shooting snipers, you may need to operate the rifle upside down and hence the requirement for control feed. :)
 
True true...maybe you could use a trap door in a moving van to hang upside down under so you could take care of an insurgent sniper in downtown Calgary... Oh wait..never mind...a push feed will be fine...lol
