New DCRA Targets, Thoughts Strategies

Alan my apologies I just assumed that you were shooting a Nightforce 12-42 like so many others I have read about. I guess an equipment list similar to Super Shoot would be a cool idea.

I have attempted to PM Larry Bartholome over at the Long Range Target Shooting board and asked him to join the discussion. If I recall correctly the chapter he wrote on shooting F class in the book “Precision Shooting at 1000 Yards” he started out with a 24x Weaver and moved up to 12-42 Nightforce. It would be interesting to get his views on the subject as he has switched from the 24x in favour of more maginifcation.

To continue the discussion Alan uses 28x30x power and will hold off 4 MOA before clicking and Kodiak uses a 16x power and turns if he is outside 1 MOA.

Mirage aside it seems to me that the higher magnification will allow a shooter to have a tighter aiming point because the target black is completely visible in the scope were as the 16x powers has a larger field of view but losses the ability to fine tune and may explain why Kodiak clicks when he is outside the 1 MOA.

If you hold over with the 16x power you can’t as accurately quarter the bull as you can with a 28x 30x. Does this seem right?

I think you're pretty close in your assessment Trevor... on days where the rings are cyrstal clear. I like seeing more of the V (x)... or what I call wiggle room in it... Some guys are really gifted, it's not a question of them hitting the V... it's where in the V they want to hit... well I'm still working on that aspect!...

then you get a day where the mirage is just absolutely killing you... there's no pretty on those days... you just keep trying to hit it period... and naturally when the wind is really up a V is a V and an X is an X!

Be interesting to get Larry's take on this... I got a chance to talk to him at Connaught and I believe he was using a 1/8 NF for that shoot. Seems he likes the 1/8 personally but I don't want to be putting words where I shouldn't...

I had the good fortunate to talk to him this year as well and he had both there one NXS the other BR model both 12-42x (back up gun) I think he said he had the NP-R2 reticle. The reason..so he could use the other marks if the wind got real strong.

comments are from memory as the conversation was about a month ago.

Trevor,
I just returned from the SOA Championships in Raton, NM. We shot on the new USA F-Class targets. The x's are 1.42" at 300y, and 1/2 moa at 500, 600 and 1k yards. The other rings go out 1/2 minute on each side. i.e. at 1k 5", 10", 20". 30", 44" 7 ring (black aiming point). Tuff! I use the NP-R2. I have both NSX & BR NF 12-42's. I prefer the BR. In Raton I was using the NSX at 3, 5 & 6 and was having to favor for elevation because of the 1/4 moa between the center of the X ring and the edge of it. I use 12x to find my target when I set up and turn it to 42x after that and leave it there. I always shoot at 42x. I think I could have used more power on our new targets. In Raton after looking at the target for the first time at 300y I asked those around me if NF could bump mine to 84x! That X ring is tiny!

Hi Larry Thanks for participating in this discussion.

You and Alan have described a new wrinkle about getting the correct elevation. With the 1/2 moa V bull (x bull) you now have to content with getting, more precise elevation as well as the windage.

Assuming that you hold off once you have your windage set did you find that you had to make better wind calls? Did the small X bull force you to hold off less.

Trevor,
I normally do not put any windage on my scope. I prefer to shoot with zero on the rifle and hold off if there is ANY chance the wind will switch to the other direction. That is why I was holding off the target frame in Raton. The small X did not affect my hold offs, I was shooting for 10's! And 5's during the 900m match in Ottawa. The x's and v's take care of themselves.

Thanks to all for the great information.

P.S.

Congratulations to Larry for Winning the Spirit of America Match.

I didn't figure out or catch on to what Larry is saying here till the last day of the shoot! Go for the 10's and 5's and the rest will take care of itself... I got so focused on trying to hit that darn V that 4's were popping out all over the place... well we learn from our mistakes or we're suppose to!

Right on congrats Larry in the Spirit of America Win... nicely done!
