A Ruger Compact in .308 would be perfect. Stainless Laminated looks pretty cool but they also make it in a blued and walnut model. I think your choice of scopes is a bit too much for close cover. I would highly recommend going with a Leupold Vari-X II in a 1 x 4 or a Vari-X III in a 1.5 x 5 with heavy Duplex Cross Hairs. I have the 1.75 x 6 Vari-X III and it is a nice scope but it's still too powerful to hit a running deer at 15 yards in the the thick stuff.
I shot a buck last year at 250 yards on 4 power and I shot a bull moose this year at 160 yards on 4 power, both with my .35 Whelen which is topped with the 1 x 4 Leupy.
