New Deer Slayer!! In slug gun form

Recently purchased a new slug gun with a really long name, Remington 870 SPS Shurshot Super Slug Gun. Regardless of the name, I am familiar with the 870's and own a couple already. I was looking for a slug gun specifically for sitting on a stand and shooting over large open areas with scattered bush in-between, so bedding areas and little hideyholes for big bucks. I just wanted to upload some pics of the new beast and get some peoples opinions of it and or if they have any experience with one, just to see if I made a good buy or a poor choice.

This one has a 25.5" barrel that is pinned to the receiver with a screw, I'm assuming for keeping it zero'd as it isn't a cantilever mount scope mount but rather a weaver type that is drilled and tapped to the receiver.

I put a Leupold ultimate slam 3-9x40 on it with the S.A.B.R reticle, which has drop compensation from 50yrds to 300.

It also has ultrgon rifling, whatever that means.

Can't see your pics there don't know if others can?

I chose to go with an H&R break open with heavy barrel and scope mounted on barrel. Simple and pretty cheap, shoots ok.

I have no experience with the 870 version you mention but hey, just try it and let us know ;)
 
Can't see pics either.

I use 870 sureshot with 23" cantilever barrel, 3-9x40 ultimate slam scope and just love it for deer. Every time is just bang and flop.

Not sure how i feel about super slug due to scope mounting on the receiver. Like the idea of directly attaching scope to the barrel especially for cleaning it and
i have 28" barrel for turkeys. So every time i take the barrel off it stays zeroed.
 
how far are you planning to shoot. that's a honker of a scope for a slug gun. hope you got good eye relief.
I had a H&R ultra slug gun. weight was around 10.5lbs with scope.
I was handloading 3" slugs, 525g lyman cast.

that thing kicked like a mule.
I wouldn't take a shot on deer past 125yds even with the new 2500fps Sabots out their
 
very nice gun .I would do two things different first I would put a stronger scope rings on it as slugs have a stout recoil and the rings should be as far apart on the scope tube as you can get them .I like a four screw ring at least .I shoot scopes on two of my shotguns one for deer and one for turkeys and have learned all about good rings versus lesser rings .try the rem accutips slugs. I have had great luck with them and have found that I never gained much by going to a three inch slug . good luck and happy shooting DUTCH

not wanting to hijack... but...

is that set up on a rem 870? what kind of scope do you use for turkey? i planned on using my 28'' with a turkey choke, wasnt planning on putting on a scope. But that sounds like a good idea.
 
Gorgeous gun! I was tempted by that model, but went with the supermag turkey-predator (I love it) but I think yours has the edge on looks for sure :)

FYI - I recently downsized my collection and decided to do some optimizing, so I have converted my 870 Express Magnum, 28" vent rib, wood stock, 12 gauge, into a "do all" gun:

SureShot stock.
Saddle scope mount.
Leupold Rifleman see thru rings.
Bushnell Banner Dusk and Dawn 1.75-4x32, 6" eye relief, circle-x reticle.
20" smooth bore, fixed Imp Cyl barrel, fiber optic rifle sights.
+3 Tactical Ordinance mag tube extension.
S&J high viz follower.
ATI polymer barrel clamp with sling stud.
Allen Yukon rifle sling, modified to hold two 12 gauge rounds, instead of four rifle rounds.

I kept the 28" barrel and acquired a 23" vent rib, turkey barrel with Remchoke and pearl bead. I now have five Remchokes; Imp Cyl thru Extra Full.

I will use the 20" or 23" barrel for slug hunting deer. It depends on which set up shoots the tightest group, between Federal Premium True Ball and Score Thug slugs. I don't plan to shoot at deer beyond 80 yards.

I can easily take the saddle / scope combo off, by removing two screws and replacing them with the two factory trigger assembly pins. (I hope to find that the scope is still at zero, when I reinstall it:) I am toying with the idea of getting a second scope saddle and rings, as I have a spare scope that I could throw into the mix.....we'll see.

ssmedic, you have found a true deer slug gun and from what I understand, with todays Sabots, it is easily a 200 yard shooter......maybe even further. Keep us posted. All the best:)
 
Hey thanks Bigfoot 870 I also have another 870 that I had made into a slug gun, its an all black composite with sureshot stock and I think an 18" rifled barrel. I also have the saddle mount scope mount and I never had a problem with returning to zero, also I never had a problem with the barrel moving around and losing zero either. I just decided to dedicate this one as my slug gun and change my other one back to a bird/clay gun. I hope to shoot at least 200 yards for target but actual deer slaying will prob be in the 50 to 100 yard range.

Yeah, I was wondering when the guy installed the rings, I asked him to consider the amount of kick the slugs will produce but he said it should be fine. I guess we'll see. These are supposed to be good rings, grand slam I think

Its not a very big scope, makes it look big with the sun shade on it lol. I get about four inches of eye relief but with the sureshot stock, your one hand basically takes
a good chunk of the recoil and helps maneuver the gun for the next shot. I plan to shoot up to 200 yards at least on the range with most of my live deer targets probably from 50 to 100, depending on how confident I get with it. If i'm constantly getting great shot placement out to 150-200, I might try at a big ol buck.
