New elk hunting opportunity in Sask. Thoughts?

I’m a little confused by this. I own land in 48 and was just there during elk season to clean up and get my cabin ready for winter. I did a few hikes for elk but didn’t see any. Anyway, that zone and many others have been switched to a bulls only zone but now they have a separate anterless season? Why not just leave it as an either ### zone and season like it was for years? They also ran that spring cull in that area. Do we have too many elk or not?

Not opposed to the anterless season at all but it just seems weird how they’re running some of these zones and populations.

I highly recommend those opposing this latest antlerless elk season submit letters or emails to the Ministry of Environment. Here's a draft letter/email to use for those interested. ChatGPT is a great tool if you struggle putting your thoughts into words. I believe that the Ministry has lost sight of wildlife management and are now having knee-jerk reactions to landowners/farmers pressure over proper herd management. The changes/reductions to quotas and season structure that were established ahead of the draw application period are not in-line with this latest short-term free for all, and is much in-line with last season's ridiculous quota short-term hunts.

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment’s recent announcement of a last-minute, short-term antlerless elk season across all southern Wildlife Management Zones (WMZs). While I understand the concerns of agricultural producers regarding crop damage, this abrupt decision undermines the integrity of wildlife management and the rights of resident hunters.

The lack of transparency and consultation surrounding this decision is deeply troubling. Neither the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation nor the Saskatchewan Bowhunters Association has publicly supported or adequately addressed this issue, leaving many hunters feeling unheard and disregarded. The absence of meaningful dialogue with stakeholders erodes trust in the province’s wildlife management process.

Furthermore, the recent shift to bull-only over-the-counter elk tags during the regular season has already restricted opportunities for harvesting antlerless elk. Many residents have waited years to draw a quality antlerless tag through the Big Game Draw, only to see their chances diminished by this sudden, unrestricted hunt. This undermines the fairness of the draw system and devalues the commitment of ethical hunters who follow the rules and respect conservation principles.

Access to hunting land remains a significant barrier. The Ministry has stated that the success of this program “rests with landowners,” yet no formal access agreements or incentives have been established. Without guaranteed access, many hunters will be unable to participate, rendering the initiative ineffective and inequitable.
Moreover, the ecological impact of this hunt has not been adequately studied or communicated. Antlerless elk—primarily cows and calves—are the reproductive backbone of the herd. A poorly managed harvest could destabilize populations and compromise long-term sustainability. Implementing such a hunt without clear population data or a transparent management plan is irresponsible.

In conclusion, this rushed antlerless elk season disregards the principles of fair access, sustainable harvest, and stakeholder engagement. I urge the Ministry to reconsider this decision, engage in meaningful consultation with wildlife organizations and hunters, and prioritize long-term conservation over short-term appeasement.
Sincerely,

As I mentioned in the other thread this is a very confusing move. I’m not opposed to this season if there are the numbers of elk to support it but I do understand the concerns of those waiting for draw tags for years and those of us restricted to bulls only in these same zones. Seems like a bizarre decision to me

We have CWD, bovine TB, . I'd like them to be upfront and give the full truth.

Most Saskatchewan hunting orgs have come out to say they weren't part of this discussion. Seems like this was mostly a push by non-wildlife agencies and goes against actual game management.

The ministry and biologists set quotas and season structures ahead of the draw application period, most of those were changed to bull only which paints a completely different picture than this unannounced and unsupported free for all. Where's the data justifying this BS??? I've spent a lot of time in elk country this year and they would make us believe that they're all over the place, when they aren't...

Imagine having rolled into Legacy (or Super A) last year after 11 years of diligently applying into the draw, you get a tag with a December season only for the ministry to call a free-for-all two weeks ahead of your season opener that will now pushed all those elk you've been keeping tabs on deeper in the bush or go completely nocturnal?!? I know a couple people who haven't filled their elk tags during the first draw season, so f'k 'em too I guess?!?

Wouldn’t mind filling the freezer with some elk. Gotta get a bigger gun if I go. Not sure the Mrs would approve…

Would it have anything to do with CWD? Not sure how it works in elk, but here in MB they're trying to wipe out the mule deer moving in from western Sask. I can buy 3 muley tags at $5.50ea. And season runs till February for them.

In my opinion that’s pure folly to think killing a bunch of animals is going to stop the spread of cwd. It’s never worked anywhere it’s been tried as far as I know. We had those big culls here in SK to no effect, pretty sure AB tried it and the US tried it many years ago.

I could be wrong, if I am I’d like to see some evidence that it works.

Oh for sure, I feel the same, but stupid governments do stupid things.. just wondering during if that's their reasoning?

There can be a multitude of incompetent reasons why the govt is making tags for this but I do know for a fact that a lot in the farming community have complained of elk ruining hay, crop, fence etc north of Regina in zones RWMZ, 21,38, 41 & 40. Does it makes sense to make it an open season for 1 week in all southern zones? I don’t think so but reasons above may be part of the decision. T

Feel for the ppl that have been waiting for years on a rifle draw...There are some going on 8 years. Why not just give out more tags with the draw system.
This doesn't make sense whatsoever...
theyve done this
my zone 42E was normally 75 cow tags then the past few years it jumped to 250.
the landowners couldnt cope with the amount of hunters and the pressure sent the elk nocturnal.

open ALL seasons up from sept15th straight thru til jan31st

stop fckn around around with a month here and week there.
it makes no sense to me atleast.

if this nov week fails the gov is bring in the indigenous to cull the elk
