FN Browning Group has unveiled their new 5.56x45mm rifle, the ARKA. The new rifle is set to have its public debut at the upcoming EUROSATORY defense exposition in Paris (15-19 June). Combining the operating system of the SCAR and the ergonomics of the AR-platfom, the ARKA is FN’s next generation service rifle.

According to FN the new rifles name, ARKA, alludes to the bow or ‘arc’ in French. The ARKA has been in development for a number of years and combines the short-stroke piston operating system of the SCAR with ergonomic and engineering improvements. It will be available in a number of variations: the standard configuration will have either a 14.5” standard barrel paired with a short or long M-LOK handguard, while the shorter carbine configuration will have a 11.25” close quarter combat barrel and the short M-LOK handguard. All configurations of the new rifle are available in FDE or black finishes.

The rifles are fully ambidextrous and will be available with either selective fire or semi-auto-only fire controls. FN say the rifle has been optimised for gas management during suppressed operation and can be paired with various suppressors, including the B&T Print-XH RBS SC, which is featured in the ARKA’s launch video.

In terms of ergonomics, FN has taken cues from the AR-platform, driven by customer requests, and in addition to new MLOK forends, the ARKA can be fitted with any AR-compatible buttstock or pistol grip. FN say “Rather than making limited changes to the AR internal mechanism and keeping many of the performance and reliability problems that are inherent to the AR, FN has taken the far superior internal mechanisms of the FN SCAR and put them into an outer body which has the ergonomics of the AR.” The rifle also features an AR-stlyle rear charging handle and a forward assist.

Christophe Soleil, FN’s VP Small Arms, went as far as to say: “FN is pleased to complement its rifle portfolio with this new AR-15-type platform that is built upon the proven performance of the FN SCAR, currently in service with over 20 armed forces worldwide,” adding “the FN ARKA provides equivalent levels of reliability, durability, and performance, allowing customers to select the ergonomics and architecture that best suit their preferences.”

As such, FN say the ARKA is less a SCAR replacement but more an accompaniment to the improved SCAR MK2.

This is definitely better than the SCAR and probably something updated to put in the offering against beretta NARP. So they reduce the bgc mass by removing the big chunk that works as the push rod anvil and the charging handle connection - so this thing won’t wreck scopes. Not quite sure there are many customers most of the re-arming decisions had been made in the last several years

This would be lovely, but unless someone states that it was designed before the OIC, then it’s a prohib. Nice to look at online I guess, won’t be in our hands lol
