A lot of guys still swear by these packs, but to be honest they’re pretty archaic. A solid metal external frame will technically support more weight, but the way these packs transfer that weight to your shoulders and hips is awful.
Virtually nobody who knows what they’re doing and has money is using these in an operational role. They’ve all been replaced by mystery ranch, kifaru, eberlestock, arcteryx, and countless other brands who make real modern backpacks.
I’ve got a couple old Alice packs myself, but they sit in the basement while I take out my modern bags.
Alice frames are still the standard for airborne forces operations in the USA and Canada. I have tried and own(ed) several eberlestock and mystery ranch options
While the Alice bag is antiquated in SOME design features (Alice webbing, no buckles) the Alice pack remains an excellent option
Bags haven’t changed that much over the years
Look at what some people do to modify theirs. IE “hellcat” Alice packs or tactical tailor “malice” packs
I have used the Alice extensively carrying heavy loads 60-80~ lbs hundreds of KM
Would take it over my eberlestock, TBH - I use a a Gucci TT rhino ruck bag and shoulder straps though
