they won't fire out of battery. Firing pin safety prevents that.
I would put money on a light charge vs a double charge.
The gun handled that exactly the way it was supposed to. Once you replace the spring, grip and grip screw you'll be good to go.
Could it have been a high primer that the slide detonated while chambering the round?
Actually a possibility, note that the hammer cocked and the slide was jammed slightly out of battery. If not a high primer, the firing pin may have broken or been jammed forward, either of which would defeat the firing pin safety mechanism. The OP may have more info now.
just curious what reloading machine your dad uses....dont tell me a dillon 550...saw at least 3 squibs this year and all of folks had been using the 550's..those presses are fine, but you really need to concentrate when you use them
