New Girsan compact catastrophic failure

I was wanting a Girsan Regard in SS so I had to read this thread because of the title.. Glad you are OK. A good reminder to us all to remember our safety glasses.

Its a great pistol, the only gripe i have about it is all the markings they could be smaller and there could be less of them.

I am really lucky i am never going take my safety glasses off while shooting again.

Gunsmith said it looks really decent and it should be fine, he is going to tear it down and check for cracks. Definitely need grips and grip screws the one closest to the catastrophe is bent.

crazy thing is "9mm luger" was etched in reverse around the firing pin could read it clear as day.

Anyone have the specs for the grip screws i have the thread pitch but i did not grab the length
 
Brownells sells upgrades screws. D spring and grips too.

tho there are a set of Beretta grips right now on the EE. Just basic plastic ones, but still pretty nice.
 
Not even a full case of powder would do that if the round was fully chambered. It looks to me like the gun fired with the round about an eighth or three sixteenths from battery. I had a similar failure in a Walther GSP .32 some twenty years ago, it blew out downwards and detonated the next round in the mag as well, but other than a new magazine it was fine. In this case there may have been brass frags in the rails. Obviously the smith got it apart, and you need to rely on his judgement.

they won't fire out of battery. Firing pin safety prevents that.
I would put money on a light charge vs a double charge.
The gun handled that exactly the way it was supposed to. Once you replace the spring, grip and grip screw you'll be good to go.
 
they are. In the Girsan thread over in the pistol forum, you will see. Everything fits. The barrel locking block requires minor fitting but everything else fits drop in. its an exact copy of a 92f. Of course the compact models have shorter barrels and slides, so that won't fit a full length one, but the rest is drop in.
 
Just got a tracking number from brownells for my hogue grips and grip screws... Was not sure about the trigger bar spring so i got one of those too.

It shipped priority post express so maybe with any luck it might be good to go for the weekend. :)

Could it have been a high primer that the slide detonated while chambering the round?

Actually a possibility, note that the hammer cocked and the slide was jammed slightly out of battery. If not a high primer, the firing pin may have broken or been jammed forward, either of which would defeat the firing pin safety mechanism. The OP may have more info now.

Smith said it looked like a way over charged round he was surprised that the firing pin was intact and that there is good protrusion. He was also impressed that the extractor was intact.

The markings on the bottom of the brass "9mm luger" were clearly transposed in reverse on the breach face. Not sure if its permanently or not...
 
just curious what reloading machine your dad uses....dont tell me a dillon 550...saw at least 3 squibs this year and all of folks had been using the 550's..those presses are fine, but you really need to concentrate when you use them

And that's exactly why I prefer 5 stations presses, so I can have a Lock Out die to catch squibs and double charges.
