New gun nut

Hello CGN.

It was my new year's resolution to finally go through the process of taking up a gun hobby. So, somehow I found the time between work and family, and did the course, went to Target Sports to shoot a few guns (excellent for newbs like me), and do the research to figure out what I will (probably) end up buying.

I'm a middle aged man with a wife and two daughters, all of whom think that the guns hobby sounds great, and want to try to shoot also. I did a bit of trap shooting when I was in University in the US, but that was the extent of my experience until recently.

I'm in Toronto, and trying to find a reasonably convenient place to shoot. I've read the various suggestion (what a disgrace about how few places there are due to our idiot Mayor). Particularly frustrated about the Hart House gun range not existing any more, since I am a U of Toronto staff member and could have used it very nicely.

Would welcome suggestions about where to go to look at, handle, and maybe even test-fire some guns. I know Target Sports lets me do that, and I'll probably go there again to try some more, but other choices would be great too. I guess I'll have to take the trip up to Ellwood Epps too since that seems to be the premier store in Ontario based on the amount of talk on the forums (is there a range there that I could try some of the guns?).

Anyway, see you all on the forums.

"...I'm in Toronto..." Where in TO? East or West? The privately owned ranges in TO are rented by different clubs every night of the week. There are several ranges, but you need to figure out what evening is best for you. Not all clubs are taking new members though.
Can't say as I ever ran into anybody at any of the clubs I shot against when I lived in TO who wouldn't go out of their way to help a new shooter find a club that shoots on the most convenient evening. Shooters tend to help new shooters. Most will let you shoot their toys too. Most clubs have or had 'club owned' loaners too.
Here's a place to start. http://www.torontorevolverclub.com/index.html
Most clubs shoot in the Metro Pistol League(Bullseye shooting. Great fun and the basis of all types of handgun shooting. Opens a whole bunch of other doors too.) Every club has its own (Provincial government edict) mandatory safety course and probationary period(that's not really a bad thing. Lets you see if you like the members. Shooting clubs being no different than any other club.)
"...take the trip up to Ellwood Epps..." Epp's is one of those places to go even if you don't buy anything. No range. Just a great deal of stuff you won't see anywhere else. Sunday is a good day to go. Open 10 to 5. You can go to the CFB Borden Museum too.

Welcome aboard!! :D
There are many fine clubs just outside the GTA... I guess it depends on what you call convenient.
Welcome again to the boards, the sport... and the obsession!

Welcome aboard. I got a good chuckle out of your handle as I haven't heard Blacque Jacque Shallaque since I was a kid. If memory serves me correctly I believe it was a character on the old Huckleberry Hound cartoon or some other cartoon of the 60's or early 70's.

Hope you find a club to shoot at. Watch your wallet... you have entered a high addiction area!!! :p

Did you get it?

Does BJS now have the Glock 17 in his home safe? Its a great firearm which will make you feel comfortable pretty fast. As I have found out, this site is a great fratenity of gun lovin nutz! Being a shooter for the past 30 years I thought I knew everything - wrong! Have learnt tons and still learning more from the expertise and experiences of all CGN members. Better make sure your safe can store more than one firearm. This evil site will open your mind as well as your wallet. Just love it! Welcome:dancingbanana:

BJS hasn't bought anything yet, but knows about gun safes.

BJS knows he will end up having to make room for at least 2 handguns (the thread about the usefulness of 22 to practice was informative) and at least a couple of shotguns (missus BJS can't handle a 12 ga).

BJS knows that once you start buying these things, it's pretty hard to stop. BJS has had this problem in the past.

BJS knows that he will be gazing at his bank account with some concern in coming months.

BJS is very happy though.

Sounds like BJS is no BS! You have a pretty good idea of what you're getting into. I wouldn't place any bets on that two handgun thing though!!!!:p

Welcome

Welcome to the board.

As for ranges I go to BRRC in Burlington and they are open 24/7 with pass card key. Only problem is 50 yards indoor (but 22-50cal capabilities). I'm in Mississauga and it's 20-30 minute drive depending on the traffic.

If you ever get a chance to go and look at the club let me know and I may be able to bring along something for you to drool over and try.

I appreciate the offer Notenough. I'm in downtown TO - so a bit a of a drive out there, but it could be managed on a Sunday. Might take you up on that some day.

I'll be doing some beginner trap shooting near Burlington in a couple of days to check out that sport. Looking forward to it.

p.s. Googling octosexual produces some highly disturbing links. Yikes!! I need the eye bleach.
