New guy here, from Richmond Hill ON

Hey there Gun Nutz. I was introduced to this place by a member here, and a friend of mine, Wolf Noir. I'm looking forward to digging around this forum and learning as much as I can, as well as contribute as I gain knowledge & experience.

A bit about myself. I've never owned or fired a firearm, though I've been wanting to learn for the longest time. My main goal for this is to join a club to do some plinking and target shooting, and perhaps eventually get into hunting small game.

I am one of the unfortunate people who's eye dominancy doesn't match manual dexterity. I shoot right, but am left eye dominant due to a sport injury in the right eye I sustained as a teenager (hence the name, DeadEyedShooter). So what do I shoot if I haven't fire a firearm? I'm very much into the sport of paintball. Because of my situation, I have been told I have to learn how to shoot left-handed when shooting long guns. I've also been told I can learn to shoot a right-handed bolt action rifle with my left, which allows me plenty of options when it comes time to go shopping for my first rifle. What do you guys think?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum, neighbor!
I'm member of Target Sports and Sharon gun club,
so i can help you to choose a club in your area.
I'm not lefty, so no help here ;-(

Interesting - my son is left handed, his hunting rifle is equipped with a thumbhole left hand stock and has a right hand bolt, he shoots extremely well with it and took him absolutely no time to be very proficient. Good luck.

I am right handed & left eye dominant. When shooting rifle or shotgun I shoot right handed using my right eye & close my left. When I shot a lot of trap I wore a patch over my left eye & that worked also.

However, you mention an injury. Can you use your right eye at all ??

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Regarding my right eye, the retina was partially detached and repaired through open-eye surgery. The lens is damaged and I now have blurry vision with my right eye. I can still see shapes, colours, and movement; just can't focus, so that crosses out shooting with my right eye. So I guess my only available options are: a) Don't shoot long guns, which is NOT an option haha... or b) Learn to shoot as a lefty.

I plan to book one of those "try it out" days at the Sharon gun club real soon, and once I get my PAL I will most likely look to become a member there. I was originally going to join the Scarborough Rifle Club, but thanks to Mr. Miller I can't now. :(

I'm in TO and thinking of joining the Sharon Club in the near future. Probably the next few weeks. I sent them a few e-mails with some initial questions after reading their online information but never heard back.
I'm looking for any feedback on the club, ranges and overall experience.
I'm new to the forum but a very experienced shooter (ex-military, infantry NCO) looking to shoot .223 FMJ semi-auto to start. 100-300 ranges. Possibly other diciplines later on (Shotgun, pistol)
Any feedback on the club and management would be much appreciated.

Also, any thoughts on crown land where I could do some longer range shooting during the warmer months outside the GTA would be a lot of help. I have an older Parker Hale .270 to resight

Welcome to the club,

Start off shooting a .22, there loads of fun and you can get tons of ammo for not a lot of $$$

Hey welcome to the sport. My father, myself my best friend and his dad are all members at sharon we have gotten into the sport about 6 months ago and we joined sharon because a family friend recommended it. It is a great club with good people and lots of variety. you can pretty much do any discipline from target shooting to handgun as well as trap shooting. Its a great range to join and is not that far away, about 40 min from where i live in thornhill.

I am mleft eye domanet too, but right handed, but can shot hand gun with either left or rightg hand, and when it comes to rifle or sdhot gun i shot right eye go figure.

Well guys, just an update. I haven't gone for my PAL yet, a minor setback at work prevented me from spending the money. But I expect to be going for it early next year.

I did finally get to fire a gun for the first time. I attended the Glock open house at Target Sports over in Gormley this past weekend. It's not very far from my home. I tried out a 9mm, .40cal, and a .45cal. I don't remember the model #'s on the pistols. A G17, G22 I think, and forgot the last one. I shot poorly, haha. We fired at paper targets that were about 5m away and I was all over the place. 7" grouping on the G17 was my best performance. :p

But anyway, I had a great time, staff were friendly and helpful, and I can't wait to try shooting a rifle.

A quick update, I've signed up for my CFSC and Non-restricted exam, it's happening after the new year, I can't wait! Also I a couple of months ago I attended a Glock day open house, got to shoot some glock pistols, my first time firing a gun, had a lot of fun.
