New guy needs help. First pistol recommendations.

Lots of good info for you here. I threw in my 2 cents on page 1 but I wanted to give you something to think about. You are trying to pick yourfirst pistol, do not expect it to be your last or only pistol. I started off on a 22, then. 357 revolver, traded up to a para 1911, traded down to a walther, traded up to a USP, in the end the only gun I still have is the 22... for now.

Oh, trust me. I know this is just the beginning....lol

My goal for a first pistol is to get one that I will be happy with for at least the first 6mths - 1yr.

I hope to get into IPSC down the line, and if I can use that same pistol for that even better.

I know I have a lot to take in and a lot of research to do. That's why I'm starting now. My course in not even for a few weeks yet.

Get in touch with the IPSC group at your shooting club, I am sure that they will be happy to answer all your questions, at the same time you will see popular brand/model gun they have,,,

I am in the same boat oneguy. I don't have my RPAL yet planning to do the course in March so I have lots of time to think about it (too much time really :p).

I am leaning toward a 1911 .22 I have shot one before and really liked it. Problem is finding the right manufacturer, everybody seems to have their own preference. I don't know what manufacturer I tried before, I was too green to all of this to even think to ask. I'm also a bit restricted on cash flow so would like to lean towards the lower to mid range ones for now. It seems I have a lot of research ahead of me.

I do not belong to a club yet. I am still looking at a few.

CZ Kadet, you will have to watch the roll pin on the slide as they can slide out. it often needs a little tweaking. otherwise is one of the best 22 pistols on the market. you don't see them mentioned here much as not many guys own them due to initial price. they run around $1000 new, you can often find them in the EE for $700 even $600 at times. it is one 22 that is NOT ammo sensitive, its extremely accurate so if you even want to get into competitions it will certainly hone your skills, by design it stay stays a lot cleaner than many other 22's which means it functions better. For a mere $65 you can upgrade the hammer to a competition hammer which turns the trigger into something wonderful.

I have owned many competition 22's and plenty of high end 22's the only one I kept and would buy more of is the CZ the frame and feel is identical to the 9mm frame. FWIW of the many guys I know that shoot many different calibers and types of pistols they too will tell you their favorite is the Kadet.

I would start with the Kadet and then work up from there.

Don't bet too ocd in your searh, whatever you buy will be easy to sell and handguns don't lose a lot of value. if you buy something and don't like it, sell it and try something else. Most guys here have cycled through a lot of guns before settling on what they really like.

GSG-1911 and a SAM or STI Spartan in 9mm. Both guns use the same general interface and handling methods, same holsters and mag pouches, one is just cheaper to shoot. Having 2 means your wife and yourself can shoot at the same time.
