New Handgun... whilst I wait for my restricted..

Interested in getting a new handgun. Sent off for my restricted over a month ago so Im hoping it'll get here soon. This will be my first handgun and restricted. Been looking on the forums and I've heard lots of good things on the M&P9 and the P226 but then I've heard bad things on both too . Im looking for something in 9mm so no .22 talk please. Im looking to spend under $1000 preferably unless I start selling things off lol. I'm a average guy 5'11 170 pounds but I got small hands and fingers, I looked at the M&P9 for this reason but heard some bad things about it. I liked the P226 and heard that with Hogue grips and the short reach trigger it makes a difference. Im not set on either or and I know people say to get out and get a feel with the guns but I would like to get some forehand knowledge too.

I'm a handgun noob, but like you said, I went and shot a CZ, Glock, Beretta, M&P, and a Sig. Since I am soo new with handguns, it was easy for me to tell the difference between the models, and I did not have any bias. I shot the new gen Glock the best, very closely followed by the CZ. For me the CZ felt very comfortable and thats what I currently have, as the Glock felt funny.
 
I have a M&P 9 Pro. The Pro model has a longer slide, better sights, and a upgraded trigger. Very very nice gun for a great price. Shoots like a laser, and with the adjustable palm swells, fits to my hand like a glove. With small hands and fingers as you describe, this would be a big selling feature if I were you.

I love the M&P9 Pro. It's on my never sell list.

I held the M&P9 and it felt great, it would be my choice I think if I ever decide on a polymer gun..and with the adjustable back straps I am sure it will fit you too.

Try the CZ75B, the M&P9, Glock 17, Remington 1911 R1, see what you like the feel of...I gave you a mix of polymer and steel guns, striker and hammer fired. Its all about what feels best in your hand when your are in your stance. If you can get to a range when you get your PAL see if members will show you

That is what I am doing, I have bigger hands so a nice big grip was what I needed.

I like the weight of a steel pistol myself, but haven't ruled out a polymer.

If you want bang for the buck get the M&P range kit, that will give you enough left over for lots of ammo and even a Tokarev (which is a great plinker)

m&p as well as CZ is good for small hands. The best thing to do is head down to your local pistol club and see what others are shooting. Most gun people will gladly let you try their guns and that way you can find out what one you shoot the best.Hard to beat a 1911

CZ is great if you have the right grips. I have small hands and I need the thin aluminum grips to reach the trigger properly.
 
What would you recommend for a CZ in 9mm. I like the price and and what's included in the range kit for the M&P. Is there any real functioning difference between a polymer pistol and a metal one other then weight?
 
I second the vote for the m&p range kit. Best bang for the buck in my opinion. Check around for pricing but you can see what is included in this link.

Thing about guns, is its not wise to follow the herd when picking a firearm. Its best to find a good dealer, and handle a few to see what feels right in your hand. I have read great things about the S&W M&P9, and it is really the only polymer gun I have any interest in, but once again, that's just me.

Some guns that have a good track record in 9mm are the Beretta 92FS, Sig P226, CZ75b and Shadow, Glock 17, S&W M&P9 and a 1911 in 9mm (Norinco makes affordable copies of several of these that will hit what you aim at and function well, while costing a fraction of the original). These are a few good examples of various types of pistols with different materials and firing systems. All would be a great pistol, if it fits your individual tastes. Remember, one persons dream gun, is another persons worst nightmare.
 
Is the gun for shooting or for fondling?

For fondling get what you find the best looking.

For shooting you need to, YES, SHOOT it. As already mentioned most folks will let you try their gun (using your own factory ammo) if you ask nicely.

The CZ I would recommend is the Combat 85. Better sights than the 75B and no firing pin block so usually a better trigger. Shadow is great for games like IPSC but kinda heavy for a plinking gun IMHO.

The major functioning difference is in the trigger between a striker fired gun like the Glock or M&P and a traditional double action/single action gun like the CZ. Otherwise they function the same. The steel guns are heavier and some find them easier to control recoil.

Shooting both is always always a good idea.

For the money the M&P is a great pistol. Not the best stock triggers, but they feel great in the hand. If you want a really good shooting pistol, a Sig with the SRT trigger would be a good choice, but at a higher cost.
