New hawken at the range

I took my just completed Hawken to the range for the first time last night.
A local fellow offered to show me how to use a caplock as well as some pointers about black powder in general. I had never even seen a black powder arm fired before so I had no idea at all. That thing is a blast to shoot. Nowhere near the kick that I was expecting, a satisfyingly large cloud of smoke and just plain cool!!

Now I need to spend a lot of time at the range to get some degree of accuracy with it.

I do need to replace that buckhorn sight though. Has anyone out there used the fiberoptic sight that is available from T/C? How is it to install and how well does it work?
My son has similar sights on his air rifle and I quite like them. I want to do some paper punching and maybe deer hunting should my accuracy get good enough.

What other sights might anyone recommend?

So you want to spoil your new Hawken with fiberoptics???? yechkkkk !
Learn to shoot with the buckhorn. At the hunting range of the gun , iron sights are perfect......

Put a LARGE Patridge style blade and a big wide slot in the rear.
it works well.

Hey Blake, welcome to the BP world, I don't anything about the glow sights, but my personal preference is the California target sights. The reason I like them is they are matched :D, no guessing as in when you buy separate sights.

Enjoy plain black powder shooting...and do not let anyone sell you a muzzle smoke supressor (ah,ah)...they are too expensive and spoil the fun of black powder shooting...

With too fancy sights , then you have less excuse to miss the target!!
 
Procyon, get what makes YOU happy, not what everyone else wants you to have. Take a look on "TRACK OF THE WOLF", they have a good web site. My old eyes didn't like the traditional sights on my Trade rifle, so I put a set of sporting sights with a white bead up front. You could also look at a peep sight, many like them.

Yes!!
I bet within the year you will be selling your cartridge arms to get more traditional gonnes.

Were you using real black or a sub?

You will find your rifle will perform best with real blackpowder!!

Always remember black powder is the most addictive substance known to man, before you know it .....Its all you will be thinking about.:D
 
Learn to shoot BP with traditional irons. Nothing looks more ### then those fiber optic sights on a traditional ML. Don't get me wrong, they have there place, but not on a hawken. Another tip...try and shoot serveral styles of rifle. I was a hawken nut until I tried my first long rifle. Now I can think of nothing more beautiful then an iron mounted tennesse, virginia, southern mountain etc. longrifle. If you watch the american boards you can pick up a custom built longrifle for less then the price of a TC Hawken. My only problem I can't afford to keep em all. I have about 6 custom guns right now. It sure is addictive. I find the longrifles easier to shoot accurately. They seem to balance better and I like the long sight picture.
 
I have been looking at a Lyman style peep sight. How are they to use and are they too dark for hunting? I have heard the suggestion that they can be used with the aperture removed and then it works as a ghost ring style. Anyone tried this? At least a peep sight would be close to correct for the period.

A lot of people like the peep, but I couldn't get used to it for hunting. I tried for a couple of seasons and gave up, although I found it great at the range for taget shooting. I like my white bead front sight and adjustable sporting rear. It is what you get used to.
