I have never had a savage .22 but I had a ruger 10/22 years ago that I liked alot, I traded it in on a ruger bolt action because I was going through to much ammo. With the semi it got so I wasn't hardly aiming the first shot. I do have a ruger 10/22 that used to be my brothers and it must be 25 years old and I can't imagine how many rounds have gone through it and it still shoots fine. The semi auto's like a little higher velocity, more expensive ammo to run the action however. Also the rugers have tons of upgrades that a guy can do relatively cheap. If it was me I would get the ruger but like I say, I don't have any experience with a savage.

good luck

There are few ways you can go with this... used bolt action .22s are pretty plentiful in the $100 range. If you just want something cheap to plink with and aren't interested in looks, customization or frills, that's the way to go.

I recently picked up a Ruger 10/22 carbine with a birch stock, and it's probably the most fun I've had with a .22. There were some things I didn't like about it, but it was relatively cheap and easy to install some aftermarket parts, and there are plenty more available. If you forsee yourself enjoying a gun you can tinker with, buy lots of neat aftermarket bits for and enjoy working to squeeze out as much accuracy and performance out of it as you can, then go with a 10/22.

I'm not trying to ward you off the Savage... I just don't know anything about it, and if you want cheap, you can get cheaper by going used.

It's mostly going to be used for gophers, and maybe some plinking, if that changes anything.

Also I think I want a new rifle. Just because then it's new and mine!

Nothing wrong with buying a previously enjoyed rifle. You can find some pretty nice pieces around $100 and they are a lot more rifle than $200 new will get you. And they already have that first scratch, so you don't have to worry about using it.
If you want to buy new though, there's nothing wrong with that. As far as the 10/22, they aren't my cup of tea, then again I have always had to be different.

I went through the same decision myself about 8 months ago, well i ended up picking the Savage BV bolt action .22 A good choice at the time, but fast forward to present day and it turns out i wish i had bought a semi-auto. For pure fun factor alone it can't be beat! The bolt actions are fun, accurate and good for practicing the fundamentals, but a Ruger semi with a 25 shot magazine is so much more.....well..... Fun! Lots of time to pick up a bolt action later, go with a semi first and you won't be dissapointed. Besides, ammo is dirt cheap, so blast away! :D

you can get what chris has. i think theres one going in the EE for a decent price. mm.. you can also try for a marlin model 60 or marlin 795, both are quite well priced. they are basically the same rifle, except one is box mag fed, and the other one is a tube mag(like the bolt that chris has). both are semi automatic.
As for the savage that you linked, i have heard goo and bad things from savage. the good mostly coming from their target barrel models though, and the bad from some of their lower models. the savage does have an accutrigger though so that is a big plus. i think the savage would be a good buy.

The picture on that link shows the Savage Mark II FV. That rifle is $230, not $180. But if you're on the market for a bolt action .22, that rifle is AWESOME. It is the most accurate .22 that I've ever fired and the Accu Trigger is really, really nice. I highly recommend the FV.
The 10/22 is an obvious choice because there are so many of them out there and all kinds of parts and accessories are available if you want to customize it.
Another option is the Remington 597. Normally, people don't mention the two rifles in the same sentence without bashing one of them. :D
However, I think they are both excellent. I happen to have the 597 and am very happy with it. It is cheaper ($170) but just as reliable as the 10/22. There are less after market parts for the 597 but it's also a more accurate rifle.

i bought the remington 597 SS as my first .22 its a semi-auto stainless steel/synthetic stock setup.... it has been very reliable to me and seems just as accurate as any other "basic" .22 ive tried i also got the aftermarket 30 round magazine for it which is fun but its a little too fun and tends to burn up the ammo quickly:cool:

there isn't really that much difference between a bolt action and a semi auto when youre plinking or gophering. so go for whichever one you want and fits you best.

Buy the same kind that I have and VOILA, we can swap mags!

In the heat of doing battle with the terrible gophers, one would hear the terrible click of the last round flying out of the Remington 597, only to yell to his buddy 30-some feet away "OUT OF AMMO! OUT OF FREAKING AMMO!" to which I would toss you a 30-round magazine, screaming back "That's all I've got!!! Make your shots count!" just before we are over-run by the furry little bastards

.... I think I should stop eating so much sugar.
