NEW: Holosun red dot sight (Aimpoint Clone)

Just mounted one on a Chiappa little badger. Nice setup, it still just fits in the little backpack provided with the badger. The velcro closes about halfway, good enough to protect the rifle. Nice low line of site on the badger, it will work well for the Grouse busting I have in mind and you can have it on your back all day without even noticing it.

Try a fast roll. Like a "Chris Costa chamber check". They don't turn on if you bump then. They would always be on in a vehicle if they were that sensitive. Needs rapid movement. Like a fast roll.

Mine doesn't turn on automatically with movement. I tried moving it all sorts of ways and tapping on it with no luck. Anyone else have that?

It's not as sensitive as a delta point. Pick it up, shoulder the rifle, and if you don't get the dot, give it a flip like you're trying to shake a mag out of the magwell. That generally does it for me.

Hey plinker try and take a picture of it and see what it looks like..... lots of people see fuzzy clustered red dots due to astigmatism. I notice it a bit specially indoors for some reason but outside in use it's not too bad for my eyes and it doesn't bother me or effect accuracy.
You could also let a bunch of other people look through it but a picture is pretty telling.

Update! A picture says a 1000 words indeed. I'm uncertain how to upload pics from my cell to here, but from your suggestion I did take pics and low and behold a crisp clear dot!? With this epiphany, I thank you for assisting to diagnose an astigmatism and prompting me to get an eye exam.

@CanadaAmmo, thank you for the speedy reply, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with your product, it's apparently yours truly who needs warranty repair. Thanks anyhow.

I have a cheap red dot which is also "fuzzy" and I thought it was just a cheap red dot, when the Holosun came (not so cheap), I thought the product had the same cheapy laser internals. I never suspected it was the eyes perspective that was failing.

Plinker, I guess astigmatism is pretty common, getting an eye exam is a good idea. An old friend of mine could never understand why people don't get regular anual eye exams and track their vision over time. I must say I've never had an eye exam beyond the basic chart.

For the people wondering about the auto on feature,
Isn't there a lockout mode that turns off the auto on? I thought I heard that in one of the reviews....

I actually own both (the only two red dots I own).

The Holosun "HS403A 2014" pros:

- A more focused/fine 2 moa dot
- Auto-on by movement feature (a good "flick" to the side with your rifle will turn the dot on, a great feature)
- Auto off after 8 hours (never tested)
- 50,000 hours battery life (quite a claim and obviously never tested)
- Brightness lock (hold down the + button for 3 seconds at desired setting, dot flashes 7 times and stays locked at the current setting even if buttons are pushed until cycled off/on. Will also auto-on back to that setting.)
- Two mounts: low and high
- Low profile as compared to other red dots (no large dial on top or side)

The negatives:

- Crazy glare when a light source is behind you. The dot is still very visible but a red reflection really distracts the eye. I also experienced the same effect on the Bushnell trs-25 but not as severe.
- Battery compartment is on the bottom so sight must be removed for battery change out
- Must use blue lock-tite to maintain tightness of the mount to sight body. The mount will loosen after a few hundred rounds or a major temperature change. Also, the Allen head screws are only accessible from under the mount when using the low mount.
-The biggest issue I have is when shooting with two eyes open. The sights center of horizon is noticeably shifted to that of your other eye. Makes quick target acquisition more difficult. With practice it is manageable but annoying none the less. I have researched this issue and found that it has reportedly been corrected in later models. I apparently received an earlier model. I also did NOT purchase the Holosun red dot via CanAm but through the USA via a big box retailer so warranty return is just too much of a hassle for me. A picture of the misalignment/distortion I found:

Overall I would purchase the Holosun Red dot again. As compared to my Bushnell TRS-25 I like it better in every way except for the horizontal alignment issue. The Bushnell does have a very slight alignment shift but its very very minimal.

Talked to Holosun.ca and I will be covered for a warranty exchange due to the distortion issue. Overall very pleased. Will be watching CanAm for the newest version!

Mine turns on, but to a middle setting every time. The lower few settings are invisible, and the middle barely visible. I just assume the battery is nearly dead out of the box. Turns on with minimal provocation. It sucks that it has to be on for 8 hours every time I wedge it into its overstuffed safe tho, even at mid power.

Really, I've moved it every which way including shaking it around like a can of paint. Rotation, side to side, up and down, all combinations. I'm sure the movement sensor must be defective. I'll just live with it, not really worth sending it back for that.

Other than that, I find it's a great product.

Just change it every 5 years or so.....
The shelf life of the battery is said to be between 5-10Years so running in the optic for 5 years or so is pretty good.
A bonus with the side loading battery is that a person could just unscrew the battery cap and manually turn it off.

I went for the side battery the thought of undoing and doing back up those tiny screws more than a couple times worries me its like scope rings you can only remove and reinstall so many times before the aluminum or Steel screws strip out

After shaking it, I'd press one of the + or - buttons and it comes on right away, at the higher power setting which I'd last had on when I powered down the unit. I've tested it a lot.

BTW to the guy who said 'it sucks to have to leave it on for 8 hours in the vault', you can turn it off by pressing both the + and - buttons at the same time.

Ya, but can't reach the buttons in the over crowded safe :D I know, first world problems lol I will get around to better accommodations sooner or later. Apparently you can dial down the ON time too. Besides, others stay on for a month at a time with no issue in there heh heh.
