New Howa Mountain rifle

BUT the mag would be real handy for getting on and off of the horse or atv you can load and unload real slick with a nice mag .Dutch

Agreed, looks much more like my idea of a mtn rifle with the floorplate/internal mag option.

I gotta agree, when both versions are seen together, in a real world photograph rather than in photo optimized for an add, I too prefer the appearance of the hinged floorplate. That would make a nice little .308 for packing in rough country.

Remington 700 Mountain SS, B&C stock, 6.5 lbs in short action and stainless steel, under $1000. No plastic bottom and a full 22" bbl.
 
That detachable mag system is fugly. Besides if you were really "mountain" hunting you load that b**** at the truck and head for the hills. No need for that and it's just more stuff stickin out to get hung up on your pack and branches etc.

I'm not a fan of B&C stocks after having a couple of their aftermarket stocks, ones on my M-7 .243, and another on a M-17 Enfiield. By the time that M-700 was restocked with something decent, it would be in a similar price range as the Howa. That's not to say that owning a M-700 doesn't have advantages, and I am fond of the platform, but the Remington stamp, particularly over recent years, doesn't ensure that you're buying a better product. I think this new rifle from Howa is their way of saying they are breaking out of the bargain basement rifle market.

They're inching that way, but the full plastic bottom with mag still screams cheap and I'm not sure on the Cerakote, a stainless bbl and action would've been better I think.

Nothing against Howa, I have a Vanguard Sub MOA and it's a nice rifle all around, but they'll always maintain the bargain rifle moniker, once you get it you can't lose it. It's the same with Savage and their $1000+ rifles........still a Savage.
 
I'd say this one would be worth the $$$ if that stock is quality. The Howa/Vanguard action is one of my favorite current productions. Should be noted the Vanguard backcountry retails around $1300 and a touch heavier, so maybe the tag on the Howa is somewhat justifiable....

While there's no logic whatsoever in that line of thinking, in fact its very ignorant, I agree it does exist. Is an axis a model 12 vlp? No its not even the same action. Is a package model 11 a 12vlp? They share a similar action but other than that not even close.

Is an sps a sendaro? Is a stainless synthetic Vanguard 2 a Backcountry? Not even close. For the amount of people who think they are knowledgeable about firearms its amazing how many people don't even understand the differences between entry level and purpose built higher finished models and lump them all together.

Cerakote is just a coating that can be put on chrome moly and stainless. I don't know what the metal is in this instance...it may not be stainless but I can't find any info.

I guess we'll see how it sells alongside a Kimber Montana to see if your theory holds any water.
