Hello guys,

I have to find for a friend the perfect hunting rig (rifle and scope) for a beginner hunter/shooter. That friend would prefer a semi auto but personally I would rather suggest a bolt action, due to his lack of experience with firearms etc.. Also he wants a caliber that would be good for deer, moose and maybe caribou...I am leaning between 270, 30-06, 7mm. The price doesn't seem to be a problem, so if you have any suggestions or comments, please let me know.

Thanks:)

OK

First gun

Hi, for a first gun, you can't go wrong with the old standy 30.06. Lots of factory cartrigdes and plentiful supply of rifles to fit any budget. Go with the bolt action.

Arch:) :)

30-06 is probably the best choice. You can hunt virtually everything with it (with the possible exception of big grizzlies and bison, but even then it's within the limits). But perhaps more importantly is ammo is easy to come by pretty cheap and that means you'll be able to practice more. Practice will kill more game for you than the difference in those cartridges will. it's also easy to reload for.

There's nothing wrong with the others - but 30-06 is probably the best choice.

The .308 might be a better choice less recoil for the newbie and it is a short action so the rifles are usually lighter.

First question is: Where are you as calibre restrictions apply in some area's of canada.

Second is, what is he planing to hunt?

I would suggest that a first firearm should be a 22rf of some kind. Next I would suggest a more mild shooting rifle along the lines of a 6.5x55 swedish mauser.

For a newbie who wants to take on the world of north american hunting, a bolt rifle from any of big manufacturers chambered in 30-06 or 308 paired up with a good,,, and i emphasize this, good quality scope with practice and a discretionary shot can kill anything that walks the new world. I say good scope, because too many times i see people cheap out on their glass. it, like the rifle itself is and investment. Leupold VX-II or Bushnell Elite 3200 minimum, magnification is a personal preference.

As quoted by an old african guide, "I could always tells the europeans from the americans just by looking at their guns. Euorpeans all had 300$ rifles with 1000$ scopes and americans all had 1000$ rifles with 50$ scopes, the europeans always did better."

If it's not too late for my two bits, depending on the friend ie. size shape wieght, and you estimation of their capabilities the choice may vary. As the others have stated semi auto would be liability in the waiting, however, a 270 win, (flat fast, acurrate) does come in a pump action. Add a scope you have a save, remington reliable, and well rounded hunting rifle. (I do agree with the 22 practice princible as well)
