I am not new to firearms, but have never actually hunted before. Can anyone recommend a guiding service in Alberta for residents? I have no clue where to start
Been mostly target shooting for the past 20yrs, and want to expand my horizons

I would suggest you take the Alberta Hunter Education program, it will teach you the basics you need to start. Then try and find someone who will take you hunting and show you the ropes.

What were you looking at trying first? Small or big game? Any specific areas you are interested in hunting?

I was hoping to try for a moose. Anywhere in Alberta would be fine, as I live in Calgary.

 Wow, moose right off the bat. If that is what you want then definately go with a guide/experienced hunter. You don't know the meaning of "Oh sh*t!" until you knock down your first moose any farther then 10ft from a road.

Seriously, take the hunter training, find someone who is willing to take you out (avoid heavy drinkers and sign shooters), and shoot a nice tasty whitetail doe:) . You will learn how to harvest and field dress an animal without getting in over your head.

Join your local fish and game club where you can shoot and meet people who will offer good advise. Besides it is nice to be in contact with like minded people.

Next year you can start putting in for draws and plan a moose trip.

Go for it.

If I had never hunted before,I would purchase a leftover antlerless mule deer tag as they are by far the easiest big game animal to find and kill. They are also relatively easy to dress as well.I do find moose to be easy to hunt if you are in an area with a good population, but as others have said, they are a large animal, and a great deal of work is involved to dress and recover them.

be prepared for a ton of work once you got your moose down as others have stated try to start small then work your way up

Don't discourage the guy fellas - if he want's to go on a guided moose hunt, more power to him. The guides won't let him get in over his head.

I'd still go get your hunters training tho bud, and I'd also take some time to do some paper plate practice in the feild. That's always a good idea.

not trying to discourage him only warning him of the work ahead once his choice of game is down

444shooter, welcome to the world of hunting! I just started 5 years ago. Went out with the g/f dad and fell in love with the chase. Your on the right track by asking around instead of heading out blind. Might be a little late for hunting course (although recommened). Try for a whitetail doe, common where I go and easy to clean. What 444 do you have? I got the marlin 444 guide. PM me if you want.
