New hunting rifle suggestions

As you can see I am having a real problelm with this one, I am looking for something Factory chambered

One Browning BLR in 358 Winchester, coming right up! :D

why dont you take that money you'd spend on a new gun and put it towards a hunting trip or buy your wife something nice ;)

"But there seems to be a hole between .270 and .30 that needs filling"

not much of a gap there,..but I like the way you think...:D

there's a gap between .257 and 6.5 too:)

maybe I should lend you one of my 223's or a 22-250 until you figure out what you want;)

how about a 25-06?:D

Then there is a little voice in my head that says I want a short action that shoots a fat bullet like a 350 remington mag, or 338 imperial( if there was a rifle factory chambered for it). Unfortunaltly the 350 rem mag is only chambered in two rifles right now a Ruger ( eeewww) and a 673 guide gun????don't really like the vent rib on it!!!

I have a bunch of rifles that will zip right through an animal but there is alot of wasted energy with them. I am also thinking of something that will dump all its energy into the animal, really nail it hard and barely exit, just kind of drop out the other side to provide a better blood trail.
O.k., the 358 Win sounds like a good bet.
Mind you a Winchester 375 Big Bore would also be excellent.
Not sure if they make them new though.
And a 38-55 would be equally interesting.
Means you could play with cast pills as well.
If you are willing to have a go with something on a long action the 9.3x62 is really good.
Like the Whelen but with a bit more oomph.
CZ, Sako & Tikka all make 'em and they're quite a popular big game cartridge in Africa.
But if you're willing to spend a little more again, how do you like double rifles?
A 2nd hand O/U is quite affordable in 9.3x74R and it would stop a grizzly.
I know it's quite different but if you like your shots fast and want a short to medium range rifle with serious punch then doubles are the dope.:)
Handles like a shotgun, hits like a city bus!:D

Her present is a WEDDING:redface:
my present is more guns:D

Plus if I get a short action she could shoot it:) It could double as a present for both of us.

What kind of velocities can you get with the 358 win?

I have absolutly no experience with them!!! The only thing that worries me is that they might not penetrate completely, but who knows maybe its the HAMMER of THOR?

Anyone shot game with one of these? Also I don't think that there is many factory rifles that are chambered for this round!!

Your right the 375 is as big as I need

WHAT:eek: , you are talking about NEED??? Want is what you mean and who would not wat a .416 Rigby or the like??
I was thinking of a 223, I had a 22-250 and the muzzle blast was incredible. A small caliber plinker/ varmint rifle would be cool I supose

The idea of a short action perhaps in a model 7 has also come to mind.
7mm-08 has always interested me but the 308 ammo is more avaliable. Todd Bartell is always raving about the 260 remington.

I also have about 8 boxes of remington cor-lokt 25-06 ammo left over from when I had a couple of those so that warrents another rifle right there!!

I already have dies for 22-250, 223, 6.5x55, 7mm-08, 25-06

I guess I could buy a couple of stevens 200's but I'm not sure if I want to taint my gunlocker with cheap guns, no- offence to those who have them its just not what I'm into, but I may break down and give'em a try.

Keep the suggestions coming, my decision isn't even close to being made yet. So many nice calibers and rifle combo's and so little money.

In the smalle calibries I would think about a 6.5 swede and get a 29" Carl Gustve!:)

Brambles,

I have seen several tons, literally, of big game hammered with the "little" 358 Winchester. Almost all of it was down for the count with a single 250 gr Speer spitzer at 2250 fps. That's why I suggested the BLR.

Forgot that you were wanting a bolt action, though, so would second the suggestion you got from Kombi, the 9.3X62. You will find, however that it doesn't just barely get through. It is a very powerful round.

Actually what you will have is a 375 H&H with five in the chamber! :D

Ruger says that they chamber there mk II rifle in 358 win. I'm not a Ruger fan so I'm having a hard time convincing myself to go that route.

The 358 is definitly worth thinking about!!!

Brambles

Oh crap, I got my cartridges mixed up. Ruger chambers a 350 rem mag NOT the 358 win.

I guess the only factory firearm that comes in this caliber is the browing blr, too bad

Brambles

Perhaps a 7.21 Firebird if you really want to reach and touch something.:) Thats about the best long range sporter there is.

I don't have THAT much cash:)

Brambles, I have the answer for you!

Buy a Stevens 200 for $319.95 from Wholesale Sports, about $360 with shipping and GST.

Have them send it to Ron Smith in Wimbourne, AB, and get him to rebore and chamber it to 358 Win for you, another $300.

Have him send it on to you $25

Total $685............and you have a brand new 358 Win bolt gun that will shoot like a match rifle.

He will even do progressive twist rifling if you want. :)

I didn't know Ron Smith Re-Bored barrels.

I don't know if I could bring myself to buy a Stevens 200. I know there all the rave right now because they're cheap and accurate but they're still a stevens.

Its like dumping a bunch of money into a pinto, in the end you still have a pinto!!!

Is re-boring a barrel just as good as if it came factory like that?

He is one of the best rebore men in North America.

If the Savage is that bad (it isn't), then spend another $200 and rebore a 700 or a Model 7.

A rebore from Ron Smith will shoot better than 99% of most factory barrels, except Savage, of course! :D

I was just browsing the Montana rifleman website looking at their barreled action combo's. Not exactly the lightest rifles in the world but it would definitly be something worth keeping. I also have a nice piece of Claro walnut gunstock blank that I have been planning to either sell or finally do something with.

Their list of calibers is fairly impressive, any idea on the quality of montana rifleman barrels? I hope for custom stuff like they sell you are going to get a shooter.

Brambles

Brambles,

Before you spend that kind of money.................... there are all kinds of used 308s around for $300 or so. Find one of whatever persuasion turns your crank, and have it rebored.

Doing this you can, no doubt, still come in at around $6-700.
