New Hunting rifle, what to buy?

Why not a Rem 700xcr 24" barrel in 300wsm only a little over 7 lbs better still if they made it in
7mmwsm. those short stubby cases can be tac drivers,

Sorry bud, I think you and your beat up pick up truck have me beat in the deliverance department. Are you sure you weren't in that movie?

Both are good choices, both originate from the 458 Win case as does the 264.

Don't be so worried over recoil, it's like riding a horse, you either go with it or get bounced around. Rifle weight and balance as well as stock design are very important factors. You want a stock with limited drop, correct length and a wide butt. If the stock fits you and the buttplate is wide and long it'll spread the recoil energy over a larger area.

My favorite stock is the NRA stock design found on pre-64 M70's. Other rifles have these as well.

Another secret to dealing with recoil is learning to sqeeze the trigger rather than jerking back on it. Yanking on the trigger is one of the best ways to master the perfect flinch. The more you flinch, the more you feel the recoil and the more the recoil, the more the flinch , and so on ------------

With equal rifles the recoil would be more with the 338 as the bullet is usually heavier creating more resisitance, giving you more recoil. Ammo is a bit cheaper for the 300 win as well. Why not eventually buy both. That's what I do.

i currently own a sako in 300winmag and while the 300 has more kick then say your 308, it is a tolerable recoil and with a limbsaver it is even more manageable. if i was looking to buy a new 300 i would suggest the steyr pro hunter. if i admit it too myself it fits even nicer then my sako. and while the tikka is supposed to be a good shooter i find personally the hollow stock to feel cheap.

If you haven't shot anything too hard kicking I'd tell you to stick with a 30-06. You don't need (or really want) anything with too heavy a barrel for most hunting applications.

Go to the gunstore, try all the 30-06 sporters you can get your mitts on and decide what feels best when you shoulder it and work the bolt. Then buy a 4x Leupold and off you go. You don't need a variable, you don't need a 30mm tube. You don't need a 50mm objective lens. A 30-06 with a 4x Leupold will do most of the hunting you'll want to do.

i have to agree with biguglyman, a 30-06 is a very good all round gun. you can get smaller bullets for deer and heavy rounds for moose without sacrificing accuracy.i hunt with a .270 for most game but have a 30-06 for moose.(the late great jack o-conner used his 270 for all game!)

your 308 will take moose no problem man but if you want a new gun and we all do as much as i love t3 in standard cartridges i wouldnt want a t-3 light in a magnum go with CZ,Browning. or weatherby

Have you ever considered the 300 RUM? You said you wanted something more powerful and this rifle shoots as flat as a 7mm mag, just carries alot more punch. It carries a 150 gr bullet at 3450 and a 180 at 3250, pretty stinking good if you ask me and if you want to go bigger a 200 gr at just over 3000fps. You will need a recoil pad for sure though and after you pack on your scope and sling you'll probably be sitting around 10lbs but then you said you don't mind the weight so that's ok.
When comparing the 300 RUM to the 338 win mag, the 300RUM just ballistically shoots faster, flys flatter and hits harder.
The downside is that the ammo isn't cheap but when has shooting ever been? ( not recently anyway).

Just got a A Tikka T3 lite in 30-06. Took it to the range Sunday for the first time and am very happy with it.
It shoots very nice groups at 100 yards with factory ammo and the kick is quite managable. Very fun gun to shoot.
I wanted a meat getter, something to carry comfortably all day while Elk or Moose or Deer hunting (kinda in that order).
I was tempted to go with a 338 or a 300 WSM but settled on 30-06. It is the right amount of recoil for me. I fired 28 rounds at the range and my shoulder was not sore at all. Its a fun gun to shoot and I look forward to filling my freezer.
Just my 2 cents
Anybody got a Tikka T3 lite in 338 or 300 WSM? if so how is the recoil?

Go 338wm. A straight stock, minimal drop that fits will lessen recoil, as will a 225 gr bullet. But you still have access to big bullets. Since you have 308 any 30 cal is more of the same. A friend just sold his Tikka 338 due to recoil. But his rem 700 kicks less, my Browning kicks even less yet. In my less than unbiased opinion go Browning in 338.
