Bullet choice is more important than cartridge choice in the "popular" choices of cartridge.

Agreed... but many suggesting light caliber and "premium" bullets....

I'd lean toward a 308 or 30-06, but only for the chance of finding ammo if you forget yours. The 7-08 is an excellent round however.

I only hunt locally and most stores around here have 7mm08 on the shelf from one brand or the other and I am planning on reloading.

Most of my hunting is done within walking distance of my house.

7mm-08 and a Remington model 7 with a good fixed 4x or compact 2-7 or similar scope is what I often look at for a general NB big game rifle. Although personally I would take a ruger M77 international in 7x57 (or any other 7x57) but that is just cause I am already set up for loading it.
