If you were thinking about retiring your old 303 and picking up a different caliber for hunting deer and maybe the odd moose, what would you pick? Keep in mind moose wouldnt be to often as you got to win the lottery for a license in NB.

I was considering a 7mm08. What do you all think of this round?

Thanks

.30-06 .... versatile from deer to moose to bear to elk.... well, you get the point... plus you can get the ammo anywhere you go...

7mm-08 is a bit light for moose IMOP

My daughter uses one; at the distances she shoots it kills deer about as good as anything else. Recoil is practically non- existent even in her little T3.

As for moose we haven't taken any with the 7-08 but I can't see where it wouldn't be neck and neck with the .270 Win and I'd shoot any moose with one of those. You can bump up the bullet weight if you want, or think you need to. I've never noticed that moose were hard to kill.

I'm looking for something with fairly light recoil as I find them a little more enjoying to shoot. If I still have to use my old .303 for moose I don't mind that. Its not often I get to moose hunt do to the draw.

Thanks

In that case, a 7mm-08 is a great deer round.... keep the .303 for moose...

I'd guess that would depend on what you hunt in; bush, prairie or a mix of the two. And anyone who says "Prairie! For Moose?" has never bumped around Southern AB or Sask.
Prairie or mixed would be a 30-06 thing.
Tight bush; 35 Whelen, 358 Win or 9.3 X 57 / 62 if you are cheap and reload. But the big old "potatiskastaren" or spud guns are pretty nice, low recoil units. Eat everything but the hole too.

For you guys that reload what brass are you using for the 7mm-08?

Thanks

I'm just using win. brass for the wife's 7-08. Not a lot of cycles on them yet, have had to trim a few of them. 140gr sierra's, 139 hornady's and 140 partitions all seem to shoot well; wife's likes the partitions and sierra's best with 46.5gr 4350.
I'm with superbad. IMPO great deer round, a little light for moose. Wife has a 375win. for moose.

Any of the 7mm and up cartridges based on the .308 or .30/06 cases will do what you are looking for... the .308 or .30/06 might be your best choice of the bunch... but I like the .358 Win or .35 Whelen if you bring moose into the equation... if you reload the .338 Fed or .338-06 are nice choices also... but then so is the .280 Rem and 7mm-08 will get it done too... really, take your pick... use a good bullet that is on the mid to heavy end for caliber...
