New Hunting Rifle

Thanks all for the comments so far. Any comments on stainless vs blued? What about that Browning? I always thought of browning as a good gun manufacturer, but the more I look on CGN not many people using them?

Browning makes a fine firearm. It comes down to personal preference, fit and feel. I have never been keen on the Brownings, but that is just a personal preference.

Personally, I like the Rugers and in stainless. Rugers fit me well and where I hunt, I like the stainless finish for durability. Don't get me wrong, I do like the look of a nice gloss finish on a beautiful piece of maple and a deep glossy blued barrel. I just can't bring myself to let something so nice get rusty and banged up.

Good luck!

If you want to talk efficiency, the 308 is much more efficient than a 270wsm, pushing a 150 grain bullet to within 250 fps of the bigger case, with 25-30 grains less powder. For your average deer hunt and the odd moose, a 308 would be damn near perfect. For a hunter used to an Enfield 303, the 270wsm is probably too much to handle right off the bat. A 308 wouldnt.

Yeah, your right, no disputing that.... Personally I love the 308...
But an SPS still wont work in NB :D :D :D Regardless of caliber:D

I decided to buy a new deer rifle last year. I've got several other rifles but wanted a new stainless rig for use in the wet climate here and around salt water. There's also a possibility that I'd use it for black bears.

I like stanway, ended up going with a Ruger m77 mk11 in .308 and I'm happy with the decision. Its a good quality controled round feed and very strong action. The rifle was right around 7 bills plus tax and I put a new Nikon Buckmasters 3-9x40 scope on it (~350 plus tax). This package would come in just under your budget and weigh right about 8 lbs all up :)

You can get a package deal down here for under 1200 bucks! T-3 Stainless Synthetic in a Standard Caliber with a Burris Fullfield 3-9 a case and a sling.
Hard to beat the quality for the money.

OK I'm going on a tangent here for a second looking at the 07 Remington catalog and reading about the 300 Rem Ultra Mag and the 3 power level. Is this Remingtons version of the 300 WSM? Looks like a Remington 700 SPS would fit the budget DM version does't come in this caliber. What your opinion on this? I know its mor power than I need but I'm a Tim the Tool man fan and the more power the better and with 3 power levels I can come down abit if I want.

Get the SPS DM and use the money you save on good optics. The 300 RUM is a long action caliber about 300 fps faster (and 30 grains more powder) than the 300 WSM. I love my 300 RUM, but it is a very specialized long range cartridge, and really doesn't make sense unless you are looking for a 400-500 yard + big game slayer. The regular 300 WSM is still a bigger cartridge than most shooters need, and I would recommend (after owning and shooting the 300 RUM, 300 WSM, 30-06 and 308 win) that 99 % of your needs will be met by the .308 Win.

Having said that..IMHO, everyone needs at least one powder guzzling, shoulder busting, neck snapping and barrel burning Ultra Mag in their collection....just not as a primary hunting rifle !

Perfect cartridge for Deer :)

Okay.......Just get the SPS in 308 win. throw on a 3-9 VXII Leo scope in some Talley lightweights.
For a thousand bucks you'll have a Great Hunting package and don't look back;)

I tend to hunt alot of power lines, clear cuts, and possibly this year a farmers fields planted with corn etc. The flat shooting 300 RUM with 3 power level cart might be an idea, with level 1 being the equivalant of a 30-06. Then on the power lines where shoots might be endless I could use level 2 or 3.

What exactly is a "3 power level cartridge"? I've never heard this term applied to a cartridge.

If you wanna 300RUM, I would strongly suggest you shoot one first. They have a reputation as being a handful to shoot and not recommended for new shooters.

A 270Winchester will handle all the power lines and farmer's field we have here in NB, plus you will be able to get ammo for it anywhere at a very reasonable price. Load it with a heavier premium bullet and you set for moose.

.

Download the 07catalog on remington site (slow download) don't think I'll be getting one at it is to much power and $60-$80 a box is to much. How and not that I'm offended but I wouldn't concider myself a new shooter, I've shoot 30/30,303 and 308 many years. Can anybody compair the 270win to 270WSM for me.

yup, my preference would run towards a LSS mtn rifle in 7-08 or 280 :)

But i dont think there are any Mountains in New brunswick, so a mountain rifle wont work either...:dancingbanana: :dancingbanana: :dancingbanana:

What is the point of a 300 RUM if you gonna shoot it at "level 1 and level 2"....totally contradictory !!

I think the development of level 1 and level 2 loads is plain stupid:mad: ....but it does indicate that many "wanna be's " found the 300RUM to be way too punishing....(if you are thinking RUM, read between the lines!)

I don't want to turn this thread into a 300 RUM thread but to say its contradictory seams harsh. I think remington is trying to provide consumers with a product that very versitile. For someone that might want one hunting rifle but hunts in many different condition, it might be a good option.
