Absolutely nothing. Finding one in this condition is almost unheard of now, and leaving it in this condition will only increase it's value.

The last time I saw a rifle in the wrapper and grease like this was back in the mid 80's, when Century Arms imported a load that were just released from an armoury in Ireland.

Leave it the way it is.

As with the "Irish" enfields, the ONLY reason it is interesting is because of it's present preserved condition. Once it's degreased & shootable it's just another No4.

There are plenty of near new No4s around which you can shoot, while the preserved No4s are (obviously) rare and decreasing in number every day.

i'd either clean it up and shoot it, or sell it and buy one to shoot. i don't need a greasy safe queen.

Considering that it is a new Savage I would be tempted to leave her - as is. It is extremely tempting to clean her off and take her to the range. However if a shooter is desired there are lots of other enfields out there to choose from.

However if a collector is not your desire then clean away!

If you bought it as an investment, leave it that way.
If you bought a rifle, shoot it
If you are "saving it" just who are you saving it for? The guy who buys it from your estate?

Nice find ... :)

Congratulations ...

I don't like these old "still boxed" girls. In my opinion only, they need to come out of the closet and be seen in their full glory, all cleaned up and ready for service.

If you're not going to do that, I'd run her through an auction sale (with reserve) in the current state starting at $700 and see where it leads .... ;)

Find some grease and improve on the amount already there. ;)

I would hate to see her do anything but stay in the grease. SOME of those rifles need to be around in the next 500 years...so you should keep that one in the grease. :)

I bought a mummy wrapped Lee Enfield from Police Ordnance 3 years ago. Unwrapped and cleaned her up 50 years to the month after she was put in storage. It's a beautiful rifle and she was made to be shot. I'm happy I did it.

If you want an investment, buy stock.

If you aren't going to shoot it, sell it and buy two shooters. Unless collecting is your thing of course. If it's going to stay in the safe, it might as well stay greased.

Nice catch.
I seen one of these "in the grease" , boxed , Savage No4's at a local gunshow not long ago.
Good thing it was greased , 'cause I might have slobbered abit over it.
If was mine , it would have been cleaned off and heated up....
I'm a such bad influence...
