New K98 owner has noobish questions

Hey y'all, my first ever K98 (sanitized Yugo capture) arrived in the mail yesterday all covered in cosmoline. Cleaning all that up will be 'fun' in itself, but the questions to start off are different:

1. I put the bolt in today to show my dad what it looked like whole, but now I can't get the darn thing out again. Where's the secret Mauser button that I push to remove the bolt?

2. Is it really possible for me to strip the rifle down into two piles, metal & wood (for cosmoline removal), or is that something I shouldn't attempt? Better left to experts?

3. Whereabouts can a guy get a sling? [Edit: oh yeah, and stripper clips.] D'ya think a place like Milarm in Edmonton might be a place to look?

Thanks for your tips, I'm sure I'll post more questions in this thread as things move along! :)

1) To remove the bolt open the action. Pull back on the bolt. Then pull the trigger and pull the bolt out.

2) yes possible. Required no.

3) Milarm,Marstar, CGN

Cheers and congrats.

Thanks for the speedy reply, stormbringer!

Crap, I was hoping it wasn't that. That's what I tried first, actually, and it won't come out. I've tried again, repeatedly, and it still catches on something (although it is wiggly when pulled out that far). :(

So I just start pulling things apart and see how far I get?!?

There's a small latch on the left side of the receiver, you must pull it outwards away from the bolt and then the bolt will come out.The latch must be kept open until the bolt is all the way out, the bolt will go back in by pushing it straight back in opposite of the way you took it out. Although opening the latch on the left side is not required to put the bolt back in.

Hey, that did the trick! Phew, thanks for the help. :D

Would soaking the bolt in a bucket of No.9 do the job?

IMHO, I would always disassemble and clean the bolt from cosmo storage as sometimes big chunks of junk will get stuck in the spring and soaking only probably won't get at them.

No problem Amandil. It is a great resource for the milsurp collector. The pics are a lifesaver!!

try this use the "historical m48 mause guide" the company is a scam but the manual is good for you take out the ### and the space before mauser

http://www. ###mauser.org/manuals/index.htm

steve1973, I just noticed your avatar. I think I remember seeing that guy on TV when I was a kid, on Access channel or something! Bwa ha ha! He had a special brush that painted some pretty slick pine trees with his "sap green" paint, if I recall correctly.

Almost as cool as Jeremy the Bear...

Yah hey was a great guy to watch, very calming, and he made painting look like anyone could do it. "happy little clouds...happy little trees". :)
Shame he died of Cancer. :(

Back on topic, congrats on your new Rifle Amandil! :)
Also don't get Cosmo in any cuts...it stings like you would not believe.

Thanks for that link, but my rifle is a K98 capture not an M48, so I don't know how much of that manual will be applicable.

Thanks! I pulled the bolt apart today, and boy is there a lot of cosmo in there! I will carefully guard any cuts, too. :) If I don't have to fold laundry this afternoon, maybe I'll start pulling apart the rest of the rifle. It doesn't look so hard after checking out the tutorial on surplusrifle.com, anyway.
