New Lee Classic Cast Press question

Did Lee do away with the through the ram primer disposal of the original Classic Cast in the new model? If so, did they give any explanation for it, or must we assume that it was done only to reduce production cost?

I would like to know, because I want to order one, but if the new ones don't have the through the ram primer disposal, I will be searching for one of the older model instead.

Thanks

Would you mind providing the link to those pages acrashb? I am on Lee's website right now and have the pages for both the Lee Classic Cast and the new Breech Lock Classic Cast presses open in front of me, but try as I might, I can see no reference at all about the primer disposal on the new press. It is, however, very prominent on the old press' page, they even include a picture of it to better illustrate the system.

Edit: Forgot to say: the picture of the new Breech Lock Classic Cast press on Lee's website shows what looks like a primer tray to the left of the ram, sort of like the side primer catch tray on the Challenger press.

Spent primers are collected and drop into a flexible plastic tube for easy emptying!

The picture shows the same through the ram set up that my Classic Turret Press has.

You got me curious enough to call.

The "Classic Cast" (p/n 90998) has through-ram primer disposal as always. The "Breech Lock Classic Cast" (p/n 90999) does not.

Both are current products. Your post mentioned "original Classic Cast in the new model" which is where we diverged - there is no "new model", there's a different model.

Both products are accessible from http://www.leeprecision.com/cgi/catalog/browse.cgi

Precisely what I thought! Thanks a lot acrashb, I think I'm ordering one of the "old" ones, since I'd rather have the through-the-ram primer disposal than the Breech Lock thingy.

The primers on the new Breech Lock Classic Cast go part way down the ram then exit to the left into a tray with a hole in it connected to a tube out the bottom. This is the same as the current Breech Lock Challengers. The primer arm tool has to be in place on the ram for this to work, other wise they can spill out the right side of the ram onto the floor.

I have an older Challenger press which works on a similar principle, with the tray to the side to catch spent primers. I hate it, half of the primers miss the damn tray and end up on the floor.

Now, maybe they have improved the angle and height of the hole, but I'd rather have the primer fall all the way down, through the ram, and into a bucket on the floor. But that is just me.

Stick a business card at the top of the tray in your Challenger press and bend it a bit to curve near the front. Presto, no more dropped primers.

Just looked at pics on my dist site. Yes, the new breech lock cast classic has a side primer catcher. The old gen has the through ram primer disposal.

I can get you either one.

My Challenger catches pretty much every spent primer so am surprised of your issues.

I love the breech lock insert and will never use a press with a standard thread again.
