New LR gun...700P or 700LTR? What's your choice?

Well I've been giving it some thought and I think I need another new gun (o.k., I want a new gun but I like to use the word need ;) )

I'm looking at the Remington 700P or the LTR and can't really decide which one. I won't be using it for much hunting as I have a dedicated moose gun already. Looking at .308 because I also have a 22-250 in the 700VS model.

Basically I plan to get into some long range shooting with this gun. I've never been a LR shooter so I don't see myself being able to shoot 1000yards anytime soon though.

Of the 700P and the LTR, which one do you guys suggest? I like the fluted barrel of the LTR but like the stock of the 700P. Also, how about the 700VSF? Would this be an option for long range shooting or should I stick to either the 700P or LTR.

I have a 4-14x42 Falcon Merlin scope on the way for the 700VS and depending on how well that scope is, I'll possibly go with the 10X42 Menace for the new gun.

Also, I don't reload so I'll be shooting factory ammo if that makes a difference.

Any thoughts?

I know Jamie is a big LTR fan so I expect he'll be voting for the LTR!:D
 
I like the fit of the P and don't like short barky little barrels.

The P will be less jumpy and will kick less.

Both are awesome guns!!!

I only went with the LTR so it would be easyer to hunt with and carry

I have two 700P's....I think it would be easier to get a 700P over the LTR simply due supply and demand..plus the 700P is a wee bit cheaper
 
Hmmm. I'm looking at the same rifles in the same caliber for the same reasons.

The 700P looks awesome but I have to admit I really like the desert colour of the VSF. Too bad Russel bumped thier VSF price from 939 to around 1200 without updating their website. Sigh. :(

The P is cheaper...I have a new 3200 10 x 40 so I need a 20MOA rail and a Bipod and I'm ready for the range.

Except I want to start shooting TR again too, and Kowas ain't cheap.

I like my 700P because of the extra bit of velocity you get out of it. It is heavier, yes, but therefore it recoils less. I could also get a "tweaked" LE version from HWMNBN for a very good price.

viper: Who cares about color! Just get a custom paintjob afterward. Guaranteed it'll look cooler anyway. Look at some of Skullboy's or Longshot's paintjobs. Oh and do you know about HWMNBN?

Russels isn't the only place to do business, is it? There's plenty other companies that'll gladly take your money.

You've already answered your own question. You want to shoot long range? Then you'll benefit from the longer barrel.

You like the larger stock? The LTR is now out and now on both of your criteria.

You prefer a fluted barrel? This eliminates the 700P.

Your choice is obvious, the VSF.

If you want side by side picture comparrisons, let me know. I happen to have all (3) of these 700's.

Well you could turn that Remington into a Target Rifle. Add a rail and iron sights and you are good to go. You can buy a Centra rear sight that fits in a dovetail base. I make custom 22mm front sights for No-Smith fit for Remington's, Savage's, Tikka's and what not.
Kowa's aren't cheap but Konus scopes are.
 
700P for long range.
Longer barrel = increased muzzle velocity = flatter trajectory and chance to use slightly heavier bullets

A little heavier = slightly less recoil
 
Personally I hate the feel of the palm swell in the 700P. I much prefer the feel of the LTR or the VSF. If your not going to handload, the extra velocity from the 26 inch barrel will help out at extended ranges. Have you had a chance to handle both??

The VSF and the 700P both use the same palm swell design. The main differnece lies in the fore-end where the VSF has a more traditional hunting design. I personally hate it as well, but the stocks are very well made and are only a fraction of the cost of a MacMillan, if one were to look purchasing one aftermarket.
