I've been using an old Lyman orange crusher press for years, no problems with it, always been great. Same with all other Lyman stuff I have. So I recommended their stuff to a buddy who is just getting into reloading.

Seems I made a mistake in recommending this stuff. My buddy gets the Lyman kit for Christmas. He sets it up and the tapped hole in the top of the press for the die is threaded SUPER rough, I mean bad, he hasn't tried a die in it yet (doesn't have one), but from the the look and feel of it, I think I would just send it back. It would be unacceptable to me for the kind of money a guy lays out for this equipment.

:(Also the handle is meant to thread in on either side, for right or left handed operation, but he figures they threaded the hole backward in the right hand side. Can't even get the handle to start in.

I read on AO that someone had picked up a set of Lyman dies from B.P.S, and when he got them home, the threads on the die body were super rough cut, not up to par for precision reloading equipment, sent them back.

Anyone else notice piss poor quality control and workmanship on the new Lyman equipment? Or are these isolated incidents?

My only gripe was the lack of really good instructions for setup.

Mine came with the glossy Lyman instruction book that covers the setup and use of nearly all their reloading equipment.

The press is very simple and the only adjustments are the torque of the centre bolt and height of the rear turret support.

I didn't think anybody bought their reloading gear at all. Seriously, Lyman is easily the least discussed brand on any internet forum I have ever visited. When the heat was on two years ago, I didn't hear anyone complain about Lyman's long lead times or lack of product availability.

For the record, the only person I know to have used much Lyman started with their tools in the late 80's. He has switched almost everything over to Lee now. He occasionally talks about maybe setting up the turret press again one day, but otherwise has nothing good to say about any of their tools, dies in particular.

I use their case trimmers and some of their case prep tools and really like their M dies.
But a couple weeks before Christmas I ordered some expander stems for an M die and they sent me expander buttons for FLR dies. I specifically said the parts were for an M died.
It has been straightened out but two more weeks to wait and then not sure I will get my credit for the wrong parts.

I have a bit of their reloading stuff - press, electric powder measure, dies etc and all is good quality. Almost all my casting gear -molds and lube sizer - are also Lyman. IMHO the Lyman products are heads and shoulders above LEE in both quality and design.

I have had some Lyman equipment; Press, dies, & shell holders. I replaced the Lyman press with a Lee Classic Cast, and like it much better. One Lyman (.308 Win) shell holder was thrown in the garbage because it was machined out of spec. I continue to use my 50 year old Lyman dies.

However, going forward my preference is Forster for dies, and Lee for just about everything else. The Lee collet die looks interesting, but I have not used it. RCBS is certainly the most available, but I find them average in quality and features, but way above average in price.

I bought the Lyman T-Mag II and it seems to be a good press. I haven't really tried it out yet though.

I never really cared for the chrome plating Lyman put on their dies,
I must not have been alone in that as Lyman dies are dang near impossible to find anywhere I've ever shopped.

I use Lyman bullet molds though and prefer them to Lee anyday of the week.
Shellholders and case prep tools are just fine as well.

I used a Spar-T press for over 30 years. I have a new T-Mag II pess waiting in the wings. I hope it gives as good service as the old Spar-T. I think every company has their boo-boos. I use a lot of Lee equipment, Progressives x3, moulds, dies, etc., and have a bit of RCBS and Lyman equipment as well. I really like the LoadAll II. I used it a lot in the past to load oddball hulls. I enjoy reloading and am not necessarily in the high volume crowd. FWIW :p
